Job Description - IV Pharmacy Technician

Description

SUMMARY: The primary role of the Pharmacy Technician Non-Pharm is to prepare the pharmaceutical agents ordered in the correct dose, for the correct patient, and to provide those drugs to the clinical staff for administration. The Pharmacy Technician role also includes direct technical procedures of drug admixture and preparation and the supply and equipment management activities. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Make sure the correct dosage is prepared for the correct patient.
  • Coordinates the transfer of drugs and supplies to satellite office staff as needed.  
  • Compares the current price lists for all drugs and supply items ordered by the practice. 
  • reviews each shipping invoice and compares the invoice with the billing documents for each location. 
  • The prices are verified with the current price list, and any discrepancies are detailed on the billing invoice. 
  • Along with the clinical director, responsible for conducting annual competency assessments for all OC Pharmacy Technicians using the clinical competency checklist defined by OC. 
  • The clinical competency of the Lead Pharmacy Technician will be assessed annually by the Clinical Director using the same defined competency checklist. 

Technical Procedures:

  1. Utilizes aseptic technique in medication preparation 
  2. Performs mathematical calculations to convert drug concentration to dosage desired correctly and efficiently 
  3. Utilizes appropriate personal protective equipment in the preparation of chemotherapy agents 
  4. Demonstrates technical skills required for drug preparation and ability to assemble required equipment 
  5. Manipulates equipment correctly 
  6. Utilizes venting and back flow filters appropriately 
  7. Reconstitutes powders according to manufacturer’s instructions 
  8. Labels medications clearly 
  9. Identifies issues of compatibility and stability for the clinical staff 
  10. Confirms new orders or changes in drug orders with clinical staff 
  11. Dates, concentration specified, and initials on vials held in storage 
  12. Verifies expiration dates on drugs and supplies utilized in practice 
  13. Mentors new nursing staff in drug preparation procedures

Supply Management: 

  1. Lynx system functions, as required for medication management 
  • Withdraw 
  • Return 
  • Inventory 
  • Load 
  • Unload 
  • Edit pocket levels 
  • Refill 
  • Reorder reports 
  • Inventory reports 
  • Activity reports 
  • Archiving 

2. Monthly inventory of supplies not loaded in Lynx system 

3. Communicate reorders for supplies from OTN / outside suppliers PRN to nurse manager 

4. Check in supplies, verify invoices 

5. Transfer supplies to main office PRN 

Administrative Responsibilities: 

  1. Maintain current product price lists 
  2. Justify invoice / bill / pricing 
  3. Maintain patient education material files 
  4. Oversee and manage drug inventory in all clinics 
  5. Max/Min in Lynx 
  6. Manually order drugs not on auto-ship 
  7. Drug Audits 
  8. Collaborate with BO on monthly drug audits 
  9. Investigate errors in lynx 
  10. Facilitate drug replacement 
  11. Train new pharmacy technicians 
  12. Serve as resource to pharm techs/nurses 
  13. Research drugs 
  14. Infusystem pump management 
  15. Superior Labs- manage clinic hood certifications/troubleshoot problems in all clinics 
  16. Visit other clinics- spot check supplies, drug inventory, etc. 

Requirements

EDUCATION/EXPEREINCE RECQUIREMENTS:

  • Pharmacy Technician Certification: Pharmacy Technicians are expected to maintain their individual Pharmacy certification and are encouraged to achieve and maintain an additional IV Certification. Oncology Consultants will provide reimbursement for fees associated with Continuing education programs targeted to maintain certification. Upon successful IV certification and/or Re-certification, submission of proof of completion and fees paid will be reimbursed to the employee. 
  • Experience is a plus
