Jail Lieutenant

JOB SUMMARY

This position supervises the processing of inmates at the Liberty County jail.

MAJOR DUTIES

1. Processes inmates entering and leaving the facility.
2. Maintains accurate logs of inmate personal property and of jail property assigned to inmates.
3. Maintains accurate logs of all booking activities and security equipment.
4. Maintains and monitor security points.
5. Prepares incident reports.
6. Obtains and prints inmate fingerprints and submits to national database.
7. Receive bail and bond monies; enters monies to inmate accounts.
8. Monitors inmate safety and security.
9. Administers first-aid as needed.
10. Searches inmates to locate contraband.
11. Maintains accurate records of all funds and medications entering the jail.
12. Maintains accurate count of inmates.
13. Supervises the feeding of inmates.
14. Operates security doors.
15. Supervises the administration of medication to inmates.
16. Performs related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION

1. Knowledge of agency policies and procedures.
2. Knowledge of basic financial recordkeeping principles.
3. Knowledge of records management principles.
4. Knowledge of inmate booking principles and practices.
5. Skill in the use of computers and job-related software programs.
6. Skill in the use of fingerprinting equipment.
7. Skill in the analysis of problems and the development and implementation of solutions.
8. Skill in the preparation of clear and precise administrative reports.
9. Skill in oral and written communication.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

The Major – Jail Administrator assigns work in terms of very general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures and the nature and propriety of the final results.

GUIDELINES

Guidelines include state and federal law, jail standard operating procedures, and agency and county policies and procedures. These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application.  

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK

• The work consists of varied administrative, management, and supervisory duties. The unique circumstances related to each inmate contribute to the complexity of the position.
• The purpose of this position is to coordinate booking and other administrative operations of the county jail. Successful performance contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of jail operations.

CONTACTS

• Contacts are typically with co workers, judges or other court personnel, probation officers, parole officers, representatives of other law enforcement or correctional agencies, inmates, and members of the general public.
• Contacts are typically to exchange information, motivate persons, resolve problems, and provide services. 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT

• The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, walking, bending, or crouching. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.
• The work is typically performed in a jail facility. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, and contagious or infectious diseases. The work requires the use of specialized law enforcement equipment and protective devices.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY

This position has direct supervision over assigned personnel within an area, department, or unit. Direct supervision typically involves the ability to manage schedules, performance, and the interpersonal issues of other employees. It may involve the ability to recommend changes to work priorities or strategies within an area, department, or unit.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor’s degree in a course of study related to the occupational field is preferred; an associate’s degree or equivalent experience is required.
• Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work.
• Possession of a valid Georgia Class C driver’s license.
• Ability to meet current requirements set forth by the Peace Officer Standards and Training Council for the State of Georgia.
