Job Title: JC Woodley Memorial Fellowship for Storytelling in Environmental Justice (Documentary) 


Reports to: Advancement Outreach & Recruitment Manager, Kimala Luna


Organization: Dogwood Alliance 


Location: Western North Carolina.


Position Type: Full-time, Hourly, Internship


Start date of Fellowship: June 4, 2025 - End date of Fellowship: August 27, 2025.

Position Summary: 


Are you interested in making a difference in the world of climate and social justice? Consider joining Dogwood Alliance this summer as our Documentary Fellow. The JC Woodley Fellowship will give you valuable environmental justice movement experience.


As a Documentary Fellow, you will: 


1) produce a video documentary related to an environmental justice issue


2) design and execute an environmental justice lesson plan for children ages 6-12. They are participants of the Horizons program in Asheville, NC. You will be a mentor to students in the Black Student Union (Asheville). 


3) deepen your understanding of the environmental justice movement in the Southern US


 


Key Responsibilities: 


 


Create a curriculum focused on teaching environmental justice. The curriculum is for children ages 6-12 in the Horizons program.



  • Establish curriculum for class

  • Receive input and feedback from supervisors before presenting the material

  • Lead the class


Create a short video documentary.



  • Document time during the internship

  • Tell a compelling story about environmental justice and industrial logging in the South

  • Complete a short video a few weeks before the end of the term

  • Present the video to Dogwood Alliance staff


Learn about environmental justice issues.



  • Attend regular Zoom meetings with Dogwood Alliance staff to learn about different programs


 


Must have: 



  • Available to work 35 hours per week beginning on June 4, 2025. 

  • Some experience with shooting and editing video (through film, phone, or other mediums) 

  • Experience or interest in teaching, curriculum development, education

  • Understanding or interest in Environmental Justice

  • Ability to communicate needs and ask for help

  • Passion for community and social justice

Travel & Location: 


We are recruiting candidates who live near Western North Carolina, within 50 miles of Arden, NC. They must have the ability to be on-site due to the nature of the Horizons program and collaborate with STM Multimedia. 


 


Compensation and Benefits: 


This fellowship opportunity is a 12-week fixed-length project. It is full-time (35 hours per week). Fellows will receive a living wage of $20.00 per hour for their work. Because this is a temporary internship position, it does not qualify for any benefits. We offer a flexible work schedule as well as holidays off.

  1. Application Review (Done on a rolling basis) All interested applicants are encouraged to submit a resume, some examples of content or videos that they’ve created and are proud of, as well as answering two application questions. 

  2. Introduction Call (Done a rolling basis) Selected candidates will be invited for an introductory call with the hiring manager to discuss the role and their interest further.

  3. Final Round Interview (May 26-June 3) Shortlisted candidates will participate in the final round of interviews, allowing for a deeper evaluation of their suitability for the position.




Final Offer (May 26-June 3) Offers will be extended to selected candidates.




Start Date (June 4, 2025) The chosen candidate begins their journey with Dogwood Alliance.




Start date of Fellowship: June 4, 2025 - End date of Fellowship: August 27, 2025.
