Make the Right Connection—Build Your Career with The Dixon Group!
The Dixon Group is looking for a Journeyman Machinist to join our team in Chestertown, MD! Day-to-day, you will plan and execute complex manufacturing projects by setting up, programming, and operating a variety of manual and CNC machine tools. Beyond machining intricate parts to exact specifications from complex blueprints, you will also troubleshoot equipment, optimize CNC programs, perform rigorous quality checks using precision instruments, and design custom fixtures.
At The Dixon Group, we value the contributions of our Military Veterans and proudly employ our nation’s heroes. Veterans are strongly encouraged to apply.
What You'll Do:
Set up, operate, and maintain multiple machine centers (including both lathes and mills) to execute complex and difficult projects using a broad range of metals.
Program CNC machines, conduct trial runs, and run computer simulations to ensure machinery functions flawlessly. You will actively revise and modify existing programs to enhance efficiency and eliminate errors.
Analyze job orders, blueprints, specifications, and design data to determine precise reference points, machine cutting paths, hole locations, and complex angular/linear dimensions.
Design fixtures, tooling, and experimental parts to meet special engineering needs. You will also fabricate, modify, and fit parts to repair mechanisms and install new equipment.
Utilize precision instruments (like micrometers) to measure, examine, and test completed units, ensuring strict conformance to specifications and verifying gauge accuracy.
Diagnose machine tool malfunctions, check spindle/turret alignment, perform tool eye alignment, and maintain machines to ensure optimal performance and minimal downtime.
Coach and train other machinists in a supportive, learning environment. You will also collaborate with engineering, supervisory teams, and external vendors to exchange technical information and improve machining methods.
Strictly adhere to all safety protocols and maintain a clean, organized work area at all times.
What We're Looking For:
High school diploma (or equivalent), licensed journeyperson status, and graduation from a CNC Apprenticeship Program.
7+ years of proven experience in a machine operation role.
Extensive knowledge of machine shop mechanics, shop mathematics, metal properties, and machining procedures, with advanced proficiency in interpreting complex blueprints and using CAM software.
Exceptional attention to detail, strong troubleshooting abilities, and the manual dexterity required to accurately and repeatedly adjust machine controls to precise positions.
Strong sense of ownership and accountability, motivated by goal achievement and increased responsibility, with the ability to work independently and proactively.
Excellent listening, communication, and interpersonal skills, with a collaborative mindset and the ability to coach and mentor team members.
Physical ability to stand for extended periods, lift up to 50 pounds, safely work around machinery, operate manual and power tools, manipulate components during assembly, and perform detailed visual inspections, with or without reasonable accommodation.

Competitive salary
Bonus programs
401K retirement plan
Training opportunities
Tuition reimbursement
Paid vacation, PTO, and holidays
