Jr. Underwriter

SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Senior Underwriter and Lending Manager, supports lending operations by using knowledge and independent judgment to determine loan risk eligibility in conjunction with regulations, guidelines, policies, and programs available. Examines, evaluates, and authorizes approval or denial of borrower’s applications for credit or extension of lines of credit, small business lending, home loan products, consumer credit loans, or credit card accounts by performing the following duties.

JOB DUTIES:

• Analyzes applicant credit data, financial status, financial statements, and property evaluation to determine the degree of risk involved in extending credit or lending money.
• Evaluate member records and approve payment plans based on earnings, savings data, payment history, and overall credit activity.  
• Provide recommendations for applications beyond approval limits set within credit union policy and provide a completed decision for applications within set limits.
• Ensures loan decisions are timely, complete and in accordance to policy and requirements set out in credit union policy and applicable regulations.
• Generates financial ratios using computer programs to evaluate members' financial status, with an emphasis on verifying data entry for accuracy.
• Reviews and updates credit and loan files as needed.
• Contact loan interviewers or members to obtain further information, present data, or explain policy or procedures.
• Stay abreast of policy and procedure changes and new loan types.
• Perform quality control duties.
• Serve as backup to Financial Services or Member Service Representatives.

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:

Assists in attaining the lending goals and objectives of the credit union. Professional approach to assessing members' credit needs while observing the established lending policies and guidelines. Professional appearance and attitude, as well as the ability to communicate effectively.

TEAM COMMUNICATION/PRODUCTIVITY/SUPPORT:

Develop and nurture a philosophy focusing on honest, open communications, individual productivity, and strong member orientation. Contribute ideas to improve member service, reduce operating expenses, and meet sales goals. Provide support to Management on operational tasks.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Associate’s degree (A. A.) or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school; or one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience can be credited in lieu of education. Continuing education is a plus.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of financial institution products, services, and operations; excellent skills in communication, customer service, human relations, information systems, and sales; ability to help develop and implement business/sales plan; very strong member/customer orientation; ability to work independently and as part of a team, solve challenges and make decisions; demonstrate flexibility and eagerness to learn and embrace challenge. Ability to lift 50 pounds, stand or sit for long periods of time, and use general office equipment such as telephone, computer, fax, and printer.
