Job Description - JUKO Camp Counselor-Seasonal

Dept/Div:  Park/Community Recreation                                                                                                                                         


FLSA Status:  Non-Exempt/Seasonal; May - August


General Definition of Work


Performs intermediate technical work organizing and coordinating the activities, programs, and children of JUKO day camp, performing educational, recreational, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the Supervision of JUKO Site Leader and Community Recreation Coordinator.

Essential Functions


Assist Site Leader in providing accurate program records, such as incident reports and daily attendance.


Supervise children to ensure safety, address behavior issues, and maintain a clean, organized, and litter-free site environment.


Ability to engage in all camp activities, such as games, team-building exercises, arts, crafts, field trips, swimming, and other games and activities.


Oversee the safety, engagement, growth, and skill development of children assigned.


Mentor Junior Counselors to develop leadership and counseling skills.


Ability to adapt quickly to changing schedules, weather, and children’s needs.


 


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities


General knowledge of youth recreational activities; ability to work as part of a team, collaborating with other counselors, site leaders, and management; ability to deal courteously and effectively with behavior issues, set clear boundaries, resolve conflicts, and use positive reinforcement techniques; general knowledge of health, safety, and first aid practices; ability to communicate effectively to motivate, encourage, and provide guidance in group settings.


 


Education and Experience


High School Diploma or GED; or currently enrolled; equivalent combination of education and experience in the field of education, recreation, or social work.


 


Physical Requirements


This works requires the occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel and repetitive motions, frequently requires stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms and pushing or pulling and occasionally requires standing, walking, sitting, climbing or balancing and tasting or smelling; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions, frequently requires exposure to extreme heat (non-weather) and occasionally requires working near moving mechanical parts, working in high, precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to extreme cold (non-weather), exposure to the risk of electrical shock and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).


 


 


Special Requirements


First Aid/CPR Certification upon hire.


Must be at least 16 years of age.


Valid driver's license in the State of Indiana; or the ability to travel between camp site locations, including field trips, throughout the day.
