Job Description - K-12 Assistant Academy Director

At Neuse Charter School, we trust our staff will:

  • Explain complex concepts in an understandable way, using a variety of teaching methods to accommodate different learning styles.
  • Engage with parents/guardians to keep them informed about student progress, successes, and areas of improvement.
  • Remain current on educational research, teaching strategies, and subject knowledge through participation in ongoing learning and professional development.
  • Assess student performance through various methods and provide meaningful feedback that helps students grow.
  • Ensure equal access for all students to have opportunities, support, and resources, and address any disparities that may arise.
  • Foster critical thinking and problem-solving skills in students, preparing them for current and future challenges both inside and outside the classroom.
  • Set and maintain high academic and behavioral expectations for all students, encouraging them to reach their full potential.
  • Foster a collaborative spirit with fellow teachers by sharing strategies, resources, and insights to improve student outcomes.
  • Demonstrate integrity, empathy, and fairness by treating all students and colleagues with respect and kindness.

Assist and support the Academy Director in all of the Academy Director's areas listed below. It will be up to the discretion of the Superintendent to determine the specific areas of support and ownership between the two K12 Assistant Directors.

General Leadership

  • Work collaboratively with NCS leadership to identify and deploy evidence-based intervention strategies, with a focus on early intervention for students at risk of academic failure.
  • Follow procedures for safe storage and integrity of all public and confidential student services records, ensuring that personnel and student record-keeping procedures comply with State and Federal law and NCS policy.
  • Maintain proper stewardship of school resources and management of student records in accordance with FERPA and IDEA.
  • Attend administrative meetings and other school events as required.
  • Supervise students in extracurricular activities as assigned, including morning and afternoon carpool duty, lunch duty, game day coverage, and other reasonable requests and directives as assigned by the administration.
  • Foster a culture of excellence, collaboration, and responsiveness amongst staff, students, families, and the community that promotes respect and professionalism.
  • Actively participate in the development and review of NCS’s strategic planning efforts, school-wide programming and initiatives, campus/facilities management plans, and related projects/programs.
  • Provide insight and resources to assist the Leadership Team in monitoring and assessing the progress toward stated goals as needed.
  • Contribute to the Student/Family and Employee Handbooks.
  • Contribute to and assist with student-centered events, including graduation, pep rallies, etc.
  • Promptly respond to all communications within 2 business days. 

Academic Leadership

  • Coordinate student participation in JOCO Works and JOCO Pro initiatives, promoting career readiness, workforce development, and community partnerships.
  • Supervise and mentor students in the Teacher Cadet program.
  • Conduct formal and informal observations of enhancement and elective teachers, providing actionable feedback to support instructional growth and performance.
  • Address K-12 dress code violations to promote a positive and equitable school culture.
  • Direct daily carpool operations, ensuring safe, efficient student arrival and dismissal procedures.
  • Planned and supervised Cougar Camps, supporting student transition, engagement, and readiness for the school year.
  • Lead implementation of Purple Star School requirements, strengthening support systems and resources for military-connected students and families.
  • Monitor and report on student tardiness, attendance, and truancy, collaborating with families and staff to improve attendance outcomes.
  • Administer student discipline procedures, ensuring consistent application of school policies and restorative practices.
  • Oversee office referrals through Educator’s Handbook, serving as the primary point of contact for behavioral intervention and administrative follow-up with a vision toward redirecting inappropriate behavior.
  • Offer training sessions to improve instructional effectiveness and proactively address potential discipline issues before they arise.
  • Work with the Director of Business to provide leadership and oversight for athletics programs, supporting coaches, student-athletes, event operations, and compliance requirements.
  • Oversee BT Mentor, MTSS, Title I, and AIG programs, ensuring compliance with district and state requirements while supporting student achievement and intervention efforts.

Beginning Teacher Mentor Program 

  • Coordinate and manage Beginning Teacher Support, providing mentorship, coaching, and professional development to improve teacher effectiveness and retention.  
  • Collaborate with the Academy Directors to support the Beginning Teachers on their staff and provide assistance with BT licensure issues.
  • Coordinate and oversee the required BT meetings for Beginning Teachers and their mentors.

AIG and Title I Programs

  • Understand and implement all special program processes with fidelity.
  • Effectively communicate and collaborate with families, colleagues, and administrators regarding student learning and progress.
  • Coordinate and deliver informational sessions and workshops for students, families, and staff.
  • Report to and collaborate with outside agencies as needed.
  • Actively participate in department, school-wide, and family meetings, curriculum mapping exercises, lesson plan development, training and professional development, and other related projects as required.
  • Actively participate in grade-level and/ or department-wide PLC(s) as invited.
  • Prepare and administer assessments (ie, formative, summative, performance-based) and score, document, and report results with a focus on mastery.
  • Evaluate students’ academic and social growth using a variety of data sources with support from the Director of Information Technology, maintain appropriate and accurate records, prepare student reports, and communicate with parents regarding their students’ progress as required by applicable laws and policies.

MTSS

  • Understand and implement MTSS processes with fidelity.
  • Effectively communicate and collaborate with families, colleagues, and administrators regarding student learning and progress.
  • Coordinate and deliver informational sessions and workshops for students, families, and staff.
  • Develop and provide classroom guidance lessons as Tier 1 support for students.
  • Report to and collaborate with outside agencies as needed.
  • Actively participate in department, school-wide, and family meetings, curriculum mapping exercises, lesson plan development, training and professional development, and other related projects as required.
  • Prepare and administer assessments (i.e., formative, summative, performance-based) and score, document, and report results with a focus on mastery with the assistance of the Director of Information Technology.
  • Evaluate students’ academic and social growth using a variety of data sources with support from the Director of Information Technology, maintain appropriate and accurate records, prepare student reports, and communicate with parents regarding their students’ progress as required by applicable laws and policies.

Student & Family Advocacy

  • Address and resolve Tier 2 parent concerns by facilitating communication among families, teachers, and administrators to support student success.
  • Manage Tier 2 student concerns, coordinating interventions and support plans to address academic, behavioral, and social-emotional needs.
  • Reinforce the importance of character and publicly recognize positive behavior.
  • Maintain frequent and close communication with school counselors.
  • Research family outreach sources and supply information when needed.
  • Navigate sensitive issues between families and school personnel.

Education & Experience:

Minimum:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education or related field.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid State of NC Professional Educator’s License, with endorsement for school administration.
  • Minimum of 5 years of successful, full-time lead teaching experience in a formal educational environment, with direct experience at their assigned level and school- or district-based administrative experience.

Preferred

  • Master’s degree in Educational Administration/Leadership, Curriculum, Instruction, or related field.
  • Experience with competency-based instructional and assessment programs.
  • 7+ years of experience within an academic setting.
  • Experience within a public charter school, or similar educational environment.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Thorough knowledge of North Carolina and federal educational laws and regulations.
  • Ability to identify, quantify, and address staff and student needs and academic performance and programs.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), PowerSchool, and related technology.
  • Able to support and articulate the school’s mission, goals and objectives in a positive and inspirational manner.
  • Expresses ideas clearly and uses language to build common understanding.
  • Aligns resources to accomplish key objectives and assigns clear accountability for important objectives.
  • Achieves meaningful accomplishments.
  • Inspires and motives others to take action.
  • Gains perspective and balances the need of daily tasks and strategic goals that impact the long-term success of NCS.
  • Works well across departments, focused on modeling and building collaborative relationships.
  • Relates well with all types of people, attentive and active listener; patient to hear others out and build rapport with dignity and tact; works collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Able to work effectively in a deadline-driven, multi-priority environment; exhibits effective time management skills and appropriate resource management; communicates interferences and delays to the Superintendent.
  • Provides accurate results that are well thought-out and complete; exhibits a high standard for excellence and attention to detail; relays information that is sufficiently detailed and promotes the desired result.
  • Uses logical methods to solve problems while producing effective solutions; probes all appropriate resources for solutions; takes initiative to identify and improve programs, systems and processes.

Physical Requirements & Work Conditions:

This position requires:

  • Normal periods of sitting, standing and walking in a school environment.
  • Reaching with hands and arms and operating hand-held and desktop office equipment on a regular basis.
  • Lifting and/or pushing objects up to 10 lbs. on a regular basis.
  • Normal vision (with or without correction).
  • Normal hearing (with or without correction).

Majority of work is performed inside an office building and temperature controlled. Level of noise is usually moderately quiet.
