The Kitchen Assistant supports daily kitchen operations by assisting with food preparation, maintaining a clean and safe work environment, and ensuring kitchen supplies are organized. This is not a supervisory role and works alongside other kitchen helpers as part of the team. The position plays a key role in helping the kitchen team deliver quality meals in a timely manner
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Daily/weekly responsibilities:
Assist with basic food preparation such as washing, peeling, chopping, and portioning ingredients.
Wash, sanitize, and properly store dishes, utensils, and kitchen equipment.
Maintain cleanliness of food prep areas, counters, floors, and storage areas.
Support cooks with meal assembly and plating as directed.
Receive and store deliveries; rotate stock using First In/First Out (FIFO) method.
Follow all food safety, health, and sanitation guidelines.
Support the team with other duties as assigned, with flexibility to help where needed.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, CERTIFICATIONS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of food safety & sanitation, keeping within health codes.
Knowledge of federal, state, and local sanitation regulations.
Ability to work in a clean and professional manner while under pressure.
Ability to interpret food service safety regulations.
Ability to make quick and sound decisions.
Ability to demonstrate respect and courteousness to coworkers, Tribal employees, community members, and vendors.
Ability to stand for long periods of time.
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
High School Diploma or Equivalent plus one (1) year of previous work experience in food services in a full-service kitchen.
Must obtain a San Diego County Food Handler card prior to beginning employment.
Must have a valid California Driver’s License.
Must successfully pass a Fingerprint-based background check of potential employees, volunteers, and contractors pursuant to Public Law 101-630 - Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act.
Must acknowledge and agree to maintain a Drug-Free workplace (including marijuana) as a condition of employment with the Pala Band of Mission Indians. Must pass pre-employment and random drug testing during employment.
