Description

The Drug Research Unit at UCSF is looking for a highly motivated lab manager in the Department of Clinical Pharmacy. The available research position will enable the individual to expand their management skills and learn new approaches in drug development and lab management. The Drug Research Unit (DRU) Laboratory Manager has a key position with the responsibility for the management of a complex research laboratory within the Department of Clinical Pharmacy that is a core facility for both the DAIDS sponsored AIDS Clinical Trials Group (ACTG) and the Center for AIDS Research (CFAR).  The DRU provides analytical support for multiple UCSF Principal Investigators involved in NIH domestic and international grant supported research. The DRU develops, validates and applies innovative and specialized analytical assays for quantification of malaria drugs, antiretroviral drugs and anti-tubercular drugs or associated therapeutic agents in body fluid specimens and target tissues. 

Duties of the Laboratory Manager include planning, management and development of laboratory operations, and overseeing the implementation of new technologies.  The Laboratory Manager will also serve as Supervisor for analytical personnel of the DRU and will be responsible for human resource management of laboratory personnel.  The Laboratory Manager acts as a liaison between a complex network of investigators, study coordinators and laboratory personnel from multiple sites.

Laboratory management:

  • Ensures that the laboratory is compliant with all applicable UCSF, County, State and Federal regulations; Ensures that the laboratory is following good laboratory practices (GLP) in completing all analytical work; Ensures all quality control and quality assurance specifications are met for sample analysis.

  • Ensures all laboratory records including those required by UCSF Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S); Maintains CDC Import permits. 

  • Is the laboratory point of contact for EH&S, works with the EH&S department safety advisor to assure the laboratory passes inspections, maintains Chemical Inventory, and use Authorization (CUA), Biological Use Authorization (BUA), Controlled  Substance Use Authorization, Radiation Use Authorization, etc.(b) Ensures that and all personnel are current in UCSF EH&S training requirement. 

  • Maintains a record of all current projects from multiple sites; Oversees the shipping and receipt of protocol samples.  Approves final analytical result reports and transmits to appropriate investigator.

  • Determines if new analytical procedures are needed to accommodate current or future projects and determines timeline; Schedules project workloads for efficient and timely sample analysis.  

  • Oversees the use and maintenance of laboratory equipment including maintaining up to date equipment certification where appropriate.  

  • Communicates professionally and effectively for representing the laboratory in lab related meetings and on conference calls.  

  • As the laboratory representative point of contact, provides a direct communication link between administration, research sites and other analytical laboratories.

  • Oversees use and trains personnel in the use of Lab Data Management System (LDMS); Ships and receives samples. 

  • Assist Director in protocol budget determination for sample analysis

  • Oversees laboratory participation in the Clinical Pharmacology Quality Assurance and Quality Control Proficiency Program (CPQA)

  • Is the point person for Information Technology (IT).

Supervisory:

  • Supervises and schedules the activities of laboratory support staff; may plan and direct work of entry to intermediate level research or instructional associates. Supervises the work of DRU laboratory personnel including staff, research fellows and students; Informs staff of changes in personnel policies; Trains, coaches, and provides laboratory orientation to all new employees.

  • Promotes and authorizes staff professional training and development, making staff aware of pertinent available workshops, seminars and conferences; develops career development plans with subordinates. 

  • Provides significant input to staff management activities including recruitment, performance evaluations and handling disciplinary issues. 

    • Works with the Department of Clinical Pharmacy to open positions, interview and select new employees in conjunction with the laboratory director; responsible for coordinating all recruitment processes, developing job descriptions, and participating in the interview and recommends who should be hired.

    • Independently decides, within budgetary limitation, who will be selected for promotion, changes to job responsibilities, and recommends which positions should be reclassified. 

    • Responsible for approving leave requests and approving timesheets, conducting performance evaluations, and resolving complains and grievances.

  • Promotes safety in the laboratory and insures proper equipment and procedures are understood and followed. 

  • Supplies financial and operational justification in support of any FTE changes. 

  • Oversees or performs laboratory research / instruction inventory planning and purchasing. Monitors expenditures and forecast reports provided by the Department, and communicates issues as needed to the Director of the DRU; Has a clear understanding of sources and amounts of laboratory expenses; Screens, reviews, and approves all laboratory and supply ordering; Determines appropriate funding source to charge; Invoices for work completed where appropriate.  

  • Negotiates equipment purchase and equipment maintenance agreements.

  • Assists in determining budgets for research projects and analytical services.

  • Works with the Department Research Service Coordinator in finalizing budgets for all grant submissions.

Research support:

Position typically supervises laboratory research and / or laboratory instruction / experiment design.

  • Performs state-of-the-art, complex research projects or instructional experimental design in collaboration with academic supervisors. In collaboration with the lab team and PI’s, calculates results and compiles result reports, supports the development of new methods, for quantification of drugs, validates new methods according to established FDA guidelines, and writes/reviews corresponding standard operating procedures and assay validation reports. 
  • As part of the lab team oversees quantitative chemical analysis of antiviral, malaria, tuberculosis or other drugs in human biomatrices using High Pressure Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) or Liquid Chromatography Mass Spectrometry-Mass Spectrometry (LCMSMS) methods.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • BA/BS in a related science and 3+ years directly related work experience; and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to interact productively with lab and campus personnel
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks effectively and work under deadlines with general guidance
  • Excellent organizational and planning skills to accurately complete detailed work
  • Basic knowledge of laboratory practices and safety
  • General computer skills and ability to quickly learn and master computer programs, databases, and scientific applications
  • Team player
  • Ability to lift up to 40 pounds
