Lab Preparatory Technician

POSITION SUMMARY

The Laboratory Preparatory Technician serves as a key laboratory operations support resource for the Research & Development and Technical Response laboratories. Responsibilities include sample preparation and retrieval, material handling, inventory management, equipment maintenance and quality control, and routine safety inspections to ensure laboratory operations are conducted efficiently, safely, and in compliance with established procedures. The position works closely with laboratory personnel and internal customers to ensure materials, samples, and laboratory resources are available to support testing activities, customer requests, and product development initiatives. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and a commitment to safety, quality, and customer service are essential for success in this role.

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS

• High School Diploma or equivalent required.


• Experience in a laboratory, manufacturing, inventory management, warehouse operations, or technical support environment a plus. 


• Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and maintain accurate records.


• Ability to work independently while effectively collaborating with a diverse team.


• Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, including Outlook, Excel, and Word.


• Ability to follow written procedures, work instructions, and safety requirements with a high degree of accuracy.


• Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining organized work areas and sample traceability.


• Ability to safely handle laboratory materials and utilize required personal protective equipment.


• Effective verbal and written communication skills with a customer service mindset.


• Experience using inventory tracking systems, electronic record systems, or laboratory information management systems (LIMS) is a plus.


• Ability to perform physical tasks including lifting, carrying, moving materials, frequent walking, and working across multiple lab and storage locations.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Adheres to all laboratory procedures, work instructions, quality requirements, and safety protocols.


• Prepares, labels, cuts, packages, and distributes samples in support of testing activities, customer requests, and product development initiatives.


• Retrieves and organizes laboratory materials, development samples, and other requested items from designated storage locations.


• Supports Technical Service, Product Development, Analytical Sciences, Quality, and other departments by fulfilling sample and material requests in a timely manner.


• Serves as a central laboratory operations resource for routine sample, material, inventory, laboratory support requests, equipment maintenance and quality control.


• Maintains organization, traceability, and accessibility of laboratory materials, project samples, and other laboratory assets.


• Cleans, prepares, and maintains test panels, substrates, fixtures, and other laboratory materials used for testing activities.


• Performs routine laboratory housekeeping activities to maintain clean, organized, and safe work areas.


• Conducts and documents routine inspections of laboratory safety equipment, including eyewash stations, emergency showers, and other designated safety systems.


• Identifies and reports safety concerns, equipment issues, housekeeping deficiencies, and other conditions that may impact laboratory operations.


• Assists with inventory management activities, including stocking, organizing, identifying, and replenishing laboratory supplies, consumables, and materials.


• Retrieves, organizes, and distributes incoming laboratory materials and supplies.


• Maintains accurate records associated with sample requests, inventory activities, safety inspections, and laboratory support functions.


• Supports laboratory personnel by preparing materials, supplies, equipment, and sample sets needed for testing activities, customer requests, and product development projects.


• Assists with movement of materials, samples, and supplies between laboratories, storage locations, and other company facilities as needed.


• Participates in continuous improvement and 5S activities to improve laboratory efficiency, organization, and safety.


• Works daily with confidential information.


• Identifies issues affecting laboratory operations and works with team members and management to resolve concerns.


• Other duties consistent with the general nature and focus of the position and/or the goals and objectives of the department may be assigned.

Based on region, the expected hourly wage for this position is $16.06 - $23.00.
