  General Description:

  Under direction, performs interpreter service necessary to facilitate communication between OU Health physician, nursing and support staff and OUH patients and their family members.

  Essential Responsibilities:

  Responsibilities listed in this section are core to the position.  Inability to perform these responsibilities with or without an accommodation may result in disqualification from the position. 

  • Translates both written and verbal communication from English to a foreign language and a foreign language to English in order to provide needed information relating to patient admitting/financial counseling, patient health conditions/symptoms, health care education information, treatment plan and discharge instructions

  • Gathers medical history and demographic information from non-English speaking patient and/or family members, in consultation with health care provider

  • Provides guidance and counsel regarding routine and complex clinic and in-patient procedures and practices, using patient’s native language

  • Provides information to non-English speaking patients and family members regarding appropriate parking, availability of overnight accommodations, cafeteria services, etc. 

  • Assists in the preparation of printed material and informational signage for non-English speaking clients covering a variety of topics related to hospital/clinic services, chaplain services, and social work services

  General Responsibilities:

  Minimum Qualifications:

  Education: High School Diploma or GED required.

  Experience: 0-3 years of experience required. Bi-lingual in one or more of the following languages as a first or second language: Spanish, Vietnamese, German, etc.

  License(s)/Certification(s)/Registration(s) Required: None.

  Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:  

  Knowledge of another culture as it relates to health care issues based on patient’s age and sex. Knowledge of OUH policies and procedures regarding in-patient and out-patient processes. Knowledge of the translation of English medical terminology.  Ability to  use effective communication techniques when dealing with cultural, educational and social-economic considerations. Skill in the use of and understanding of subtle nuances associated with the foreign language.  Skill in establishing effective communication between two individuals who speak a different language. Ability to Analyze complex situations and to relay information without personal judgement in an understandable manner.  Expressing words and thoughts in a clear and concise manner, and comprehending and explaining instruction on behalf of a health care provider.
