Description

  

The Land Preservation Specialist supports Openlands’ mission by advancing land acquisition and conservation efforts across the greater Chicago region. This role works closely with local governments, private landowners, and community organizations to protect and enhance open space through real estate transactions, conservation easements, and strategic planning. This is a hybrid, full-time non-exempt position that reports to the Conservation Attorney. 


Requirements

  

· Identify and evaluate real estate opportunities aligned with Openlands’ conservation goals.

· Manage real estate transactions from contract to closing, coordinating with legal and finance teams.

· Supervise consultants such as appraisers, surveyors, and environmental professionals.

· Respond to inquiries and assist in identifying priority areas for land protection.

· Build and maintain strong relationships with landowners, government agencies, nonprofits, and community groups.

· Conduct site visits and monitor conservation easement properties; engage landowners in stewardship.

· Maintain the land preservation database and assist with Land Trust Alliance reaccreditation.

· Draft conservation easement documents, baseline reports, and related project materials.

· Support outreach and public engagement through events, website content, and fundraising communications.

· Assist attorneys with administrative tasks, including document preparation and legal research.

· Local travel to project sites (approximately 25% of the time).

· Perform other duties as assigned.

Education, Skills & Abilities:

· Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, urban planning, real estate, or a related field.

· Minimum of two years of relevant work experience.

· Knowledge of land preservation, real estate transactions, and governmental processes.

· Proficiency in Microsoft Office and GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS).

· Strong organizational, written communication, and project management skills.

· Valid driver’s license and access to a personal vehicle.

· Ability to walk and assess properties in varied terrain and weather conditions.

  Preferred:

· Experience with conservation easements and land trust operations.

· Familiarity with nonprofit or public sector work environments.

Compensation:

Salary range: $50,000–$60,000, commensurate with experience. Comprehensive benefits package including: Health, life, and disability insurance; 403(b) retirement plan with up to 5% employer contribution. Paid vacation, sick leave, and holidays.
