Job Description - Landfill Operator


Compensation: $43,000 - $47,000 annually
FLSA Status: Full-Time, Non-Exempt


Position Summary
Under the direction and supervision of the Landfill Manager or The Director of Public Works, this position should be able to perform skilled labor and operation of heavy equipment. This position performs duties that are skilled labor for the operation of the landfill tipping face, maintenance of landfill roads and drainage. The Landfill Operator will collect applicable fees, provide information and direction to customers, monitor loads and site activities, and help staff with various tasks.

General Duties and Responsibilities
Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Essential Functions
• Operates equipment of various sizes and weights, in loading, hauling, and unloading of various equipment, materials and supplies.
• Operation of trucks, snowplows, backhoes, and tractors during the winter months to keep the landfill roadways cleared and open for public use.
• Assists with digging of trenches, covering the landfill, compacting trash and with special projects when directed by supervisor.
• Performs duties in accordance with safety policies and procedures daily.
• Ability to communicate to mechanics about equipment repairs and maintenance.

• Performs daily inspections of equipment, keeps equipment clean, and regularly schedules maintenance of heavy equipment.
• Daily operation of the landfill and Recycling Center.
• Monitor entrance to county landfill operation to ensure conformity with landfill operational requirements.
• Checks all loads brought to landfill for possible hazardous materials.
• Prevents admission of any potential hazardous substance or prohibited materials.
• Assesses necessary fee.
• Collects fees and issues receipts as required.
• Directs vehicles to correct dumping locations.
• Answers inquiries related to landfill operations.
• May set-up and maintain files and bookkeeping records for operations as directed.
• Does light clerical work including correspondence and reports.
• Operates computer equipment and ensures timely updating of data base.
• May recommend distribution and sorting of waste materials per policy.
• Identifies and recommends materials for recycling; greets the public and assists users with landfill information.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
• May assist in sorting recyclables and other site tasks.

• Help the other landfill employees.
• Drive to other locations to perform assigned duties.

Not applicable, could possibly change.

Requirements
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Must possess a Colorado Driver's License
  • CDL Class A or B valid driver’s license preferred not required.
  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • Must pass drug test.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships and customer service protocol with other County employees, representatives of other agencies and organizations, and the public
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing.
  • Preferred bilingual in English and Spanish.
Physical Activity & Work Environment
The incumbent will perform work primarily in an indoors office environment. They can expect to sit for long periods of time in front of a computer. They will also perform work outdoors at the Lake County Landfill and on County Roads. The incumbent should be prepared to lift objects up to 100 lbs. as needed but can expect those occurrences to be infrequent. They may be exposed to chemicals, moving machinery, and loud noises. The incumbent should be able to see both near and far distances and use peripheral vision, with or without assistance from glasses/contacts.

Notice of Emergency/Disaster Responsibilities



All Lake County Employees may be required to work as a Disaster Service Worker when a local declaration of emergency or disaster is declared by the Board of County Commissioners. To be prepared for this role, all employees and emergency service function (ESF) leads will attend emergency management trainings and exercises as requested by the Director of Emergency Management. With advanced notification from OEM, employees will make reasonable efforts to attend training events in coordination with other employees and supervisors.
