Job Description - Laser Operator

Bio Fab Technologies is a custom stainless-steel fabricator that manufactures equipment for the Food and Pharmaceutical industries and with our continued growth we are looking to add an impact player to our team as a Laser Operator.

A Laser Operator provides cut parts to Fabrication, Welding and Polishing department or direct delivery to the end user customer. Operates the Bystronic 6000 Laser Cutter: load raw material, unload cut material. Deburrs cut parts, inventories, tracks and stages for next operation.

Job Responsibilities

Locate proper raw material. Move/relocate as necessary to machine area, by hand or by fork truck. Load onto laser by hand or by overhead crane.
Select the proper program and adjust machine per material to be cut. Use machine interface to select program. Use machine interface to adjust settings thickness/type of material to be cut. Change cutting head and nozzle tips as specified by the job sheet. Edit the program as needed depending on the material available.
Unload and label each cut part. Inventory each cut part, considering the quantity specified by the job sheet. Remove (manually or with crane) cut part(s). Transfer all cut parts to deburring table.
Remove all sharp edge(s) of cut parts with hand and/or tools. Remove metal burr by hand and/or air tools (deburr).
Stage cut parts by placing on tables/skids in the order that the next operator (Fabrication/Welding/Polishing) will need them to maximize efficiency & minimize extra material handling.
Save & inventory larger off cuts/drops for later use. Label these with Heat Number and material type & thickness/gauge.
Dispose properly any unusable material (skeleton cuts) in the appropriate bin (stainless vs. all other materials).
Participate in all safety programs and follow all safety policies and rules.
Judging the quality of the initial cut in each job for proper machine function (quality of cut). Adjust machine settings as needed to improve cut quality. Laser Programmer can assist with 1^st cut quality judgment and machine adjustments as needed.
In some cases, determine which piece of drop to use in each job. Job sheet will define the type and thickness of the material as well as the minimum sheet size (length and width).
Adjust the job sequence to group jobs using like materials. This reduces the amount of tooling changes from job to job. Hot/rush jobs are placed first in sequence.
Based on urgency, determine whether to stage or deliver cut parts: stage on table or skid vs. deliver directly to next operator (fab, welding, polishing).
Determine whether to save the drop or recycle/dispose of it factoring in physical size of the drop and/or the type of material as well as the current level of drop inventory.

Qualifications
Minimum Education: High School diploma
Training/skills required (all of which may be obtained on the job):

Metal Deburring/Edge Breaking: 2-3 weeks
Overhead crane operation: 1-2 days
Forktruck operation: 1-2 days
Bystronic Laser Operation: 2-3 months
Material Identification (type and finish)
Read/use a tape measure

Preferred Education/Experience: Bystronic machine operation, overhead crane operation and fork truck operation.

Physical Requirements
Standing up to 8+ hours per day.
Frequent bending, stooping and reaching. Eye damage is a risk with laser cutting – safe operation must be adhered to at all times.
Routine lifting of up to 50 lbs. Periodic requirement to lift over 50 lbs. (it is expected that you will find help lifting any load in excess of 50 lbs.)
