SUMMARY 

The LAUNCH Special Education Teacher serves students with significant behavioral, emotional, social, and academic needs in a highly supportive alternative education setting. This role is grounded in the belief that students must feel safe, connected, and regulated before they are ready to learn. The teacher provides highly intensive individualized instruction and relationship-centered practices that help students build the skills needed for long-term success in school and life. The LAUNCH Special Education teacher reports directly to the Director of Alternative Placement. Students in the LAUNCH Program present with significant social-emotional, behavioral, mental health, and academic needs that require intensive, individualized intervention and a highly individualized environment. 

The LAUNCH teacher creates conditions where students can stabilize, regulate, build trust, and re-engage in learning through the program pillars of Safety, Connection, Regulation, and Skill Building.

This position requires an educator who is trauma-informed, relationship-driven, calm under pressure, skilled in de-escalation, and committed to helping students make meaningful progress through high-support, individualized programming.


Requirements

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Create and maintain emotionally, physically, and psychologically safe learning environments.
  • Establish predictable routines, clear expectations, and consistent responses.
  • Use proactive behavior supports, de-escalation strategies, and crisis prevention practices.
  • Implement behavior intervention plans and individualized supports.
  • Maintain a calm, respectful environment during times of student dysregulation.
  • Participate in safety training and crisis response procedures.
  • Support students in restoring safety, repairing relationships, and re-engaging after dysregulation.
  • Build strong, trusting relationships with students through consistency, empathy, and connection.
  • Communicate regularly with families, school districts, case managers, and community partners.
  • Work collaboratively with a strong teaching/support team involving a variety of educational professionals. 
  • Build strong, trusting, and consistent relationships with students experiencing school avoidance, trauma, behavioral challenges, or emotional dysregulation.
  • Promote partnership between LAUNCH programming, families and home school district teams.
  • Teach and model emotional awareness, coping skills, and self-regulation strategies.
  • Use co-regulation practices to support students during moments of stress or dysregulation.
  • Deliver individualized special education instruction aligned to IEP goals and student readiness levels.
  • Perform all aspects of program management, preparation and implementation of effective teaching strategies. 
  • Teach daily social and emotional learning skills (SEL), communication, regulation skills, executive functioning and problem solving skills. 
  • Participate in the development and implementation of appropriate academic and functional IEP goals and objectives. 
  • Collect and analyze student performance data, including IEP data, to develop and maintain effective instructional outcomes 
  • Use Non Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) training methods when the need arises for physical intervention with students. 
  • Practices continuous professional growth based on feedback, research and best practice. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned. 

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS 

Experience, Education, and/or Licensure: 

  • Special Education Teacher certification from the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, or working toward appropriate certification. 
  •  Experience working with students with emotional/behavioral disabilities, autism, trauma histories, or complex support needs.
  • Experience with positive behavior intervention planning and functional behavior assessments. 
  • Knowledge of executive functioning and social-emotional learning frameworks. 
  •  CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute) certification in Nonviolent Crisis Intervention Training (not required, but willing to be trained).

  • Exhibit a professional, businesslike appearance and demeanor. 
  • Computer skills, including email, Google Drive, word processing and virtual meeting facilitation. 
  • Professionally represent the agency, public and school districts in interactions with staff, customers and community. 

WORK ENVIRONMENT / PHYSICAL DEMANDS 

Work Environment: 

  • Ability to work in a professional and flexible office environment, with or without visual and audible distractions. 
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, assisting students with significant behavioral needs including verbal and physical aggression. 
  • Valid driver's license and the ability to drive as needed. 

Physical Demands: 

  • The employee may occasionally push, pull, carry, lift and/or move equipment up to 20 pounds. 
  • Ability to react quickly to a student's movement and behavior. 
  • Prolonged sitting or standing.
  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, and movement throughout the day.
