Job Description - Lead Bioinformatics Scientist

As the Lead Bioinformatics Scientist, you will be an integral part of our researcher-facing team, leading the support of Purdue's bioinformatics initiatives at Rosen Center for Advanced Computing. This position provides several opportunities for research collaborations, leadership, external community engagement, and professional development.

With limited oversight from manager, you will be responsible as the subject matter expert for leading, designing, and managing projects using computational tools on large-scale research computing systems. You will engage in active development of collaborative partnerships with university researchers, staff, and external collaborators to lead computational implementation of workflows needed to drive Purdue's cutting-edge life sciences research while addressing data privacy requirements should they apply. You will utilize creativity and innovation to solve complex computational problems raised by researchers and help reduce research bottlenecks. You will consult with researchers to identify and determine requirements based on their unique research needs and collaborate with them to develop proposal opportunities. You will provide strategic and technical leadership for shared cyberinfrastructure initiatives and evaluate current and future trends in areas of high-performance computing, high-throughput computing, and data. You will design and deliver training workshops on computational tools that support bioinformatics research. You may be responsible for coaching and reviewing the work of lower-level professionals.

We are seeking individuals with expertise in bioinformatics and will provide support, mentorship, and training in cyberinfrastructure (CI) best practices to the successful candidate to support research teams at Purdue and nationally.

With this hybrid position you will work on the Purdue West Lafayette campus as well as opportunities to work some days remotely.

The target pay for this position is between $100,000 - $114,000 commensurate with experience and education.

What We're Looking For:

Education and Experience Needed
Master's degree in life sciences related domains or computer science
Four (4) - Five (5) years of experience required from below:

Four (4) years of experience in using high-performance computing, high-throughput computing, coding, scripting, or analyzing and optimizing performance of scientific applications
Two (2) years of experience conducting research or working with researchers or research groups

An equivalent combination of education and experience will be accepted

Preferred
PhD in life sciences related domains

Skills Needed:
Effective communication and interpersonal skills including the ability to consult with researchers
Demonstrated the ability to collaborate with researchers
Demonstrated the ability to build, test, troubleshoot, and optimize scientific applications
Knowledge of high-performance computing systems
Demonstrated project management and prioritization skills with the ability to plan, organize and prioritize tasks, and complete projects with minimal supervision
Demonstrated self-motivation, analytical, and problem-solving skill
Ability to:

mentor students
effectively make presentations and develop and present training
work as part of a high performing team in a collaborative environment
work positively in an inclusive and diverse environment

Preferred:
Demonstrated ability to effectively mentor other professionals and delegate tasks
Good English communication skills, including experience in submitting papers or contributing to grant proposals
