Job Description - Lead Environmental Services (EVS) Technician

PLEASE NOTE - This position may require temporarily relocation to other TONHC Facilities: Sells Hospital, Santa Rosa Health Center, San Simon Health Center, Casa Grande, and San Xavier Health Center.


Position Summary:


Under the general supervision of the Environmental Services Supervisor, the incumbent serves as a Lead EVS Technician responsible for providing a safe care environment for patients, staff, and visitors at the TONHC Sells Hospital and clinics by providing guidance and direction to EVS Technicians. Travel may be required to assist at other TONHC Facilities at any given time.


Scope of Work: This position is located on the Tohono O'odham Nation and requires healthcare settings. The incumbent is oversees daily staff duties and assignments and ensures timely completion. Also, the staff complies with proper environmental cleaning and disinfectant principles, methods, and procedures in accordance with organizational standards of quality and infection control.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities: (Depending on the area of assignment, an incumbent may not be required to perform some of the duties listed below):



  • Provides instruction to subordinates received from a supervisor and demonstrates proper work methods in a responsible team environment.

  • Performs duties while demonstrating working knowledge of the health care cleaning and disinfecting principles and requirements, proper and safe chemical use, equipment use, and handling.

  • Ensures needed equipment and supplies are available and in working order.

  • Sweeps, vacuums, mops, scrubs, strips, buffs, and waxes floors. Washes walls, windows, screens, Venetian blinds, shades, and other similar items.

  • Vacuums and shampoos, rugs and carpets as required. May extract carpet as needed.

  • Ensures appropriate stock of janitorial supplies by taking inventories and ordering supplies as needed.

  • Empties and disposes of trash from wastebaskets.

  • Cleans and disinfects patient's rooms, restrooms, offices, hallways, and other assigned areas daily to prevent cross contamination.

  • Scrubs and disinfects commodes, urinals, washstands and fixtures, mirrors, soap and paper towel dispensers daily.

  • Daily replenishes paper supplies, liquid soap, and sanitizer in dispensers.

  • Collects soiled linen, regular waste, bio-hazard wastes and delivers to assigned disposal area.

  • Routinely inspects equipment and cleaning supplies on EVS technicians service carts for cleanliness and to ensure it is properly stocked after each shift.

  • Terminal clean and disinfect a room after a patient is discharged or transferred, including isolation rooms, using proper techniques for both high and low touch surfaces.

  • Maintains and disinfects hospital morgue, including patient trays.

  • Answers workers' questions regarding procedures, policies, written instructions, and other directives.

  • Provide information to supervisor on status and progress of work, causes of delays, and overall work operations and problems.

  • Follows all environmental and infection prevention practices, such as but not limited to, proper cleaning and disinfecting protocols and process, hand hygiene, standard and isolation precautions, as well as proper donning and doffing of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

  • Reports the need for major repairs to supervisor.

  • Assist the supervisor with coordinating staff training for all routine cleaning and decontamination processes for all surfaces, proper use of chemicals, equipment usage, and safety concerns.

  • Recognizes and adheres to patient privacy requirements as defined by the Health Insurance Portability and
    Accountability Act (HIPAA).

  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned and contributes to a team effort.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:



  • Knowledge of the Tohono O'odham culture, customs, and traditions.

  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, tribal laws, regulations and compliance.

  • Knowledge of environmental services, tools and equipment.

  • Knowledge of chemicals, cleaners, and disinfectants.

  • Skill in providing superior customer service to internal and external customers.

  • Skill in the proper use and care of electric, power, and hand tools and equipment.

  • Skill in analyzing problems, projecting consequences, identifying solutions, and implementing recommendations.

  • Ability to plan and organize work activities.

  • Ability to communicate efficiently and effectively both verbally and in writing.

  • Ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.

  • Ability to maintain privileged, confidential information.

  • Ability to work independently and meet strict timelines.

  • Ability to prepare, process, or maintain records, reports, and forms.

  • Ability to work extended hours and various work schedules, including weekends and holidays.

  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle.


Minimum Qualifications:



  • High School Diploma or General Education Diploma

  • Two years of work experience in custodial services, healthcare environmental services preferred.


Licenses, Certifications, Special Requirements:



  • Upon recommendation for hire, a criminal background and a National FBI fingerprint check are required to determine suitability for employment, including a 39-month driving record.

  • May require possessing and maintaining a valid driver's license (no DUIs or major traffic citations within the last three years).

  • If required, must meet the Tohono O'odham Nation tribal employer's insurance requirements to receive a driver's permit to operate program vehicles.

  • Based on the department's needs, incumbents may be required to demonstrate fluency in both the Tohono O'odham language and English as a condition of employment.
