Job Description - Lead Licensed Veterinary Technician

JOB SUMMARY

The Lead Veterinary Technician oversees the veterinary technician team, facilitating efficient operations, coordinating shift workflows, and mentoring team members to foster professional development. This role prioritizes procedures and treatments, ensuring high-quality patient care and adherence to safety standards. The Lead Veterinary Technician also performs quality assurance activities and communicates recommendations for improvements to the Veterinary Technician Supervisor. Additionally, this position maintains a safe and healthy work environment by enforcing organizational standards and adhering to legal regulations.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE SKILLS & ABILITIES

Education and Licensing:

  • Associate degree in a related field.
  • Current and valid VTNE license.
  • Working knowledge of medical terminology and competency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.

Experience:

  • Experience in animal care and handling, veterinary practices, procedures, and medicine.
  • Experience working collaboratively with a diverse group of individuals.
  • Event planning and experience in non-profit or conference settings is desirable.

Skills:

  • Technical Skills: Ability to analyze complex issues and ensure timely resolution of technical challenges; implement solutions effectively.
  • Animal Handling: Proficiency in safe handling and restraining of animals of varying temperaments, sizes, and weights.
  • Physical Stamina: Capable of standing for long periods, performing work requiring concentration, and manual dexterity.
  • Safety Compliance: Awareness of safety standards, including the use of protective equipment (e.g., gloves, masks, eyewear, shoe covers, aprons) during labs.

  • Communication: Strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to write clearly, participate in meetings, and read and interpret written information.
  • Organization and Time Management: Ability to work autonomously, organize and prioritize tasks, and meet quarterly objectives.

Availability:

  • Ability to work flexible schedules, including weekends, nights, and holidays.
  • Available to work year-round and handle varying hours as department needs dictate.

JOB SPECIFIC DUTIES     

  • Clinical and Technical Procedures:
  • Perform venipuncture and catheter placement.
  • Induct and monitor anesthesia.
  • Conduct radiography, including dental radiographs.
  • Prepare surgical packs and assist in aseptic surgical procedures as needed.
  • Administer intramuscular, subcutaneous, and intravenous injections.
  • Collect laboratory specimens for analysis.

 Animal Care and Handling: 

  • Safely restrain and handle animals of varying sizes and temperaments, including large animals/equine.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and sanitary environment for animal care.
  • Ensure proper handling and care protocols to maintain animal welfare.

 Facility and Equipment Maintenance: 

  • Stock and maintain necessary medical and cleaning supplies; order additional supplies as needed.
  • Prepare surgery room, surgery prep room, clinical pathology room, and other rooms for events.
  • Clean and sterilize all medical and non-medical equipment and supplies.
  • Conduct regular maintenance of medical equipment to ensure functionality and safety.
  • Adhere to VG and DEA policies regarding control substance logs and ensure accurate record-keeping.

 Documentation and Record-Keeping:

  •  Maintain accurate and complete medical records in line with regulatory requirements.
  •  Ensure compliance with safety, operational, and sanitation standards.
  •  Keep thorough and up-to-date records on all procedures, inventory, and animal care activities. 

Customer Service and Support: 

  • Provide exceptional customer service to all guests, sponsors, and participants in the facility.
  • Assist educators during training sessions, providing technical support and animal handling as needed.
  • Address attendee inquiries and ensure a high level of client satisfaction during events and labs. 

Professional Development: 

  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge through educational workshops, reviewing relevant publications, and attending   industry events.
  • Pursue continuous learning to remain up-to-date with advances in veterinary technology and best practices. 

Additional Duties: 

  • Support the organization’s mission by ensuring the highest quality of care and service.
  • Collaborate effectively with team members to optimize operations and create a positive work environment.
  • Report facility maintenance or repair needs promptly and follow up to ensure issues are resolved.
  • Participate in inventory management to anticipate and address supply needs proactively.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
