Job Description - Lead Maintenance Technician

Description

Position Summary:  

Southern Southeast Regional Aquaculture Association (SSRAA) is recruiting for full-time Lead Maintenance Technician at the Crystal Lake Hatchery, located at mile 17.5 Mitkof Highway in Petersburg, Alaska. The Crystal Lake Hatchery program includes incubation and rearing of 1.7 million Chinook and 100,000 coho salmon.  This position does not include housing.

The ideal candidate can develop healthy working relationships with co-workers and have a willingness to learn and share knowledge and skills. Desired maintenance skills include knowledge of: carpentry, welding, plumbing, basic electrical, mechanical, maintaining preventative maintenance records, use of hand and power tools, and project planning.   Benefits include: health, dental, vision, life, long-term disability insurance, and participation in a 403b retirement plan.  SSRAA is an equal opportunity employer.  This posting will remain open until filled. Reports to: Hatchery Management Team Member Assigned or Facilities & Infrastructure Team Member Assigned

Location: SSRAA Hatchery Assigned or Facilities & Infrastructure Department

Summary of Position: Under the direct supervision of the department management team. Performs required maintenance and construction functions as primary focus. Is responsible for the performance of the preventative maintenance program, repair of equipment, minor construction projects and maintains an adequate parts and supplies inventory. Also performs any assigned tasks related to the daily operations of the hatchery freshwater and saltwater rearing activities and projects, as needed. Through the Hatchery Manager may coordinate with and assist the Facilities and Infrastructure Department, as assigned.  

Maintenance Responsibilities & Duties:

  • Performs maintenance and repair at all SSRAA sites as needed. Organizes and records maintenance schedules on major equipment. Provides input on maintenance and repair needs for annual and mid-year budget documents. Trains personnel in proper maintenance and repair techniques. Provides maintenance and repair summary to the manager(s) at the end of the month.
  • Performs or assists with a variety of construction and fabrication projects. Develops plans and material lists for projects as assigned. Orders supplies for projects and assists in project prioritization. Provides project summary to supervisor at the end of the month.
  • May supervise maintenance technicians, seasonal workers, and fish culturists assigned to a maintenance task.
  • Perform other duties as assigned which may include fish culture duties as needed, such as but not limited to: harvest, eggtake, and ponding.

Requirements

Skills & Abilities Required:

  • Successful work history in multiple trades including skills in plumbing, welding, electrical, mechanical repair, and carpentry.
  • Experience in construction and maintenance projects.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel or compatible equivalent.

Preferable, but not required skills and experience:

  • Working knowledge of fish culture practices and hatchery operations.
  • Small boat operation.
  • Competence with developing cost estimates and making-ordering materials lists for maintenance projects.
  • Rigging experience

Physical demands: Position requires physical/repetitive work, the ability to stand and walk for long periods of time. Must be able to lift, carry, push, pull, stoop, bend over, stretch, climb and sometimes work in confined spaces. Ability to lift and carry in excess of 50 lbs.

Work environment: Will require working indoors around cold running water sometimes in low light conditions with high ambient noise and working outdoors in inclement weather often around water. Some travel by boat and seaplane is required.
