Lead Mechanic Job Description
Major Areas of Focus
Lead Mechanics maintain and repair the company’s fleet of trucks, heavy equipment, and small-engine equipment within an assigned region or division. This leadership role demands broad mechanical expertise, diagnostic skills, and versatility in fabrication, troubleshooting, preventive maintenance, and component repair.
Lead Mechanics oversee Mechanics and Shop Technicians, assigning tasks, ensuring quality, and mentoring for optimal performance. They adhere strictly to safety standards, keeping all fleet assets safe and reliable.
Lead Mechanics must be fluent in spoken and written English for technical documentation, safety protocols, and manuals. They must hold a valid driver’s license and be willing/able to fly commercially for out-of-state projects and surge operations.
Trade Skill Requirements
- Leads scheduled and unscheduled repairs, ensuring safe, professional, and accurate execution
- Enforces company safety policies without exception
- Operates and tests equipment/machinery for fleet maintenance
- Drives company vehicles as needed
- Demonstrates master-level proficiency in one or more specialties:
- Small engine repair
- Fleet/automotive repair
- Diesel engine repair
- Fabrication and welding
- Electrical or hydraulic systems
- ASE Certification (preferred)
- Conducts advanced diagnostics on engines, transmissions, hydraulic/electrical systems, and components
- Troubleshoots and resolves mechanical issues efficiently
- Oversees fabrication, welding, cutting, or reconstruction
- Supports all fleet maintenance tasks, delegating as appropriate
Winter Season Operations (as needed)
- Operates trucks/loaders for snow removal
- Applies salt/de-icing materials to paved surfaces
- Leads storm recovery, cleanup, and restocking efforts
- Oversees winter equipment maintenance/repairs

Training Responsibilities
- Trains/mentors Mechanics, Shop Technicians, and field personnel on minor maintenance, equipment handling, inspections, and proper use
- Reinforces fleet operation standards organization-wide
Image Compliance
- Maintains clean, organized, professional shop environment
- Keeps service vehicles/trailers clean and professional
Administrative Requirements
- Reads, writes, and completes repair orders, documentation, inspections
- Oversees administrative tasks including:
- Equipment Repair Requests
- Monthly Vehicle Safety Inspections
- Trailer Safety Inspections (as applicable)
- Uses smartphone/tablet for photos, emails, work orders, system updates
General Qualifications
- Minimum 5 years professional mechanical repair experience (small engine, fleet, diesel, industrial equipment)
- Proven leadership in overseeing teams
- Broad expertise in:
- Mechanical repair
- Preventive maintenance
- Fabrication
- Diagnosis/troubleshooting
- Fluent in spoken/written English (required)
- Valid driver’s license
- Able/willing to fly commercially for out-of-state/surge operations
- Proficient with smartphone for communication/documentation
- Able to pass illicit drug test and criminal background check
- Complies with business ethics, confidentiality, laws/regulations
Work Environment / Physical Requirements
- Works near automotive traffic, water bodies, uneven surfaces
- Uses lifts, hoists, torches, heavy tools
- Available for overtime/extended shifts
- Works outdoors in extreme weather (0°F–95°F), including sun/rain/snow/ice
- Lifts/carries 50 lbs.
- Frequent bending/twisting/kneeling/stooping/climbing
- Other duties assigned based on needs
