Lead Mechanic

Morin Repair Services is hiring a Lead Mechanic for our Tampa operation. This role covers the same work as our Rotating Equipment Mechanic, disassembling, inspecting, reconditioning, and assembling pumps, gearboxes, winches, marine windlasses, and similar machinery, but at a higher level of experience and responsibility.

The Lead Mechanic must be able to work independently, take a job from receipt through assembly and testing, and run field jobs without direct supervision. Work is in the shop and in the field, mostly local to Tampa, FL. Much of our work comes from the maritime industry.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Duties include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

• Disassemble, clean, inspect, recondition, and reassemble pumps, including centrifugal, vertical turbine, split-case, positive displacement, and other marine and industrial pumps.
• Repair and overhaul gearboxes, winches, marine anchor windlasses, capstans, and similar deck and shipboard machinery.
• Take and record accurate measurements of shafts, bearing fits, bores, wear rings, clearances, runout, and endplay, and compare them to OEM specifications.
• Identify wear, damage, and failed components, and report findings clearly with notes and photos.
• Install bearings, mechanical seals, packing, couplings, and wear parts using correct methods and tools.
• Troubleshoot, remove, install, and align equipment in the field, including shaft alignment and startup support.
• Read and interpret equipment manuals, drawings, and work orders to perform the required repairs.
• Work closely with the machinist on parts that need machining, and confirm fits before final assembly.
• Use precision, hand, and power tools, rigging, and material handling equipment safely.
• Provide planned and emergency support, including after-hours and weekend work when the job requires it.
• Keep the work area clean and organized, and follow all safety and quality requirements.
• Work independently on shop and field jobs, and make sound technical decisions on the job.
• Lead jobs from teardown through assembly, and direct mechanics and helpers assigned to the job.
• Plan the work sequence, tools, parts, and manpower needed, and keep the job on schedule.
• Communicate findings and progress to the Shop Manager and Operations Manager, and to customers on site when needed.
• Write clear inspection notes and measurement records that support quotes and exit reports.
• Check the quality of work before it leaves the shop or the job site.

• 10+ years of hands-on experience repairing pumps and rotating equipment, with time as a lead or senior mechanic.
• Proven ability to work independently in the shop and in the field.
• Extensive experience disassembling, inspecting, reconditioning, and assembling pumps.
• Experience with gearboxes, winches, marine windlasses, or similar machinery.
• Strong knowledge of mechanical systems, bearings, seals, fits, clearances, and alignment.
• Skilled with precision measuring tools, and able to judge when a part can be reused, repaired, or must be replaced.
• Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, drawings, and schematics.
• Good communication skills and the ability to deal professionally with customers and Chief Engineers.
• Valid driver's license. TWIC card, or the ability to obtain one.
• Must be able to lift, carry, or otherwise move up to 50 lb regularly, and work in heat, tight spaces, and at heights.

PREFERRED

• Experience on equipment from the maritime industry.
• Marine and industrial repair experience.
• Bonus: heat exchanger experience, including tube bundle, plate, and shell-and-tube cleaning, testing, and repair.
• Shaft alignment experience using dial indicators or laser alignment tools.
