JOB SUMMARY

Under the general direction of the Laboratory Director, the Lead Medical Technologist assists the Laboratory Director by monitoring the work of technical and ancillary employees. The Lead Medical Technologist assists in test development, gathering data for management reports, and regularly performs the duties of a Medical Technologist, including the accurate performance of routine and advanced testing in accordance with TJC, federal, state, and local guidelines, organizational and departmental policies, and procedures. This position functions as the Laboratory Supervisor during the Lab Manager's absence. Assures compliance with the Effingham Health System mission and values for providing service excellence.

STANDARDS OF PERFORMANCE

1. Assumes supervisory duties and performs `in charge’ duties as needed. evaluate problems in the absence of the Lab Director and solve those that are possible. Communicate problems with the Laboratory Director or Executive Director as appropriate.
2. Assist with, plan, develop, organize, implement, evaluate and direct the programs and activities of the Laboratory department      identifying and correcting problem areas, and/or the improvement of services.
3. Maintains an excellent working relationship with the medical profession and other related facilities and organizations.
4. Assists in the observation and documentation of laboratory staff performance evaluation and competency.
5. Assists the Laboratory Director with staffing, scheduling, and payroll as needed or directed.
6. Works in collaboration with the Lab Director to improve workflows, processes, and proper use of equipment and reagents.
7. Serves as Subject Matter Expert in special projects. develops, coordinates, participates, performs, and/or evaluates projects accordingly (i.e., builds, tests, and maintains the laboratory modules -General lab, Microbiology, and Blood Bank).
8. Maintains Lab policy and procedures updating them when needed to ensure compliance with all regulatory      requirements.
9. Ensures timely completion of quality assurance activities in the Laboratory, including but not limited to verification and correlation, proficiency testing, quality control and competency assessments.
10. Serves as a resource for other employees by sharing knowledge of procedures or testing outcomes when consulted and provides input on the department's needs.
11. Facilitates departmental new hire orientation and training in an organized, thorough manner.
12. Maintains and reviews appropriate scheduled and unscheduled maintenance and ensures complete equipment maintenance records reporting any hazardous conditions and/or equipment problems immediately to the lab director.
13. Maintains controls for departmental testing - builds, monitors, making adjustments and corrective actions for department controls.
14. Demonstrates awareness of appropriate inventory levels in all relevant sections of the laboratory. Orders and maintain supplies for departmental testing and analyzers, takes action to prevent supply shortages or overages, and purchases supplies as directed.
15. Ensures that all chemicals and biologicals are labeled in accordance and compliance with facility policies, procedures, and regulations issued by governmental or regulatory agencies.
16. Assists in properly disposing of chemicals and/or biologicals per current regulations and EHS-established policies and procedures.
17. Ensures adherence to proper infection control, OSHA, and safety standards.
18. Covers all areas of the clinical laboratory, including chemistry, toxicology, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, blood bank, limited microbiology, molecular testing, specimen collection, quality control, instrument maintenance, calibrations, and accurately reporting test results in a timely manner.
19. Requires direct contact with patients, collection, processing and transport of specimens.
20. Participates in continuing education.
21. Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Level of Education: Completion of a Bachelor’s Degree required in Medical Technology or closely related sciences with credit hours meeting AMT or ASCP registry and meets the Georgia requirement of a technologist as defined in DCH law Code of Georgia of a technologist Chapter 111-8-10-.06(4)(b)1-8

Licensure, Certification, Registration: Certification as a Medical Technologist (ASCP, AMT, or equivalent), or Recent graduate from an approved accredited program within the last six months of hire date and must be certified within 18 months of degree conferred date.

Work Experience: Two years of experience as a Medical Technologist is required; previous hospital laboratory experience is preferred.

Tools and Equipment Used: Calculator, personal computer, telephone, facsimile machine, paper shredder, copier, printer, standard phlebotomy equipment and collection devices, syringes, needles, measuring devices, a full range of laboratory testing equipment and recalibration equipment.
