Job Description - Lead Pharmacy Tech

Position Summary:

Central Valley Specialty Hospital is seeking a dedicated and skilled Lead Pharmacy Technician to oversee the daily operations of our pharmacy, ensuring compliance with established policies and guidelines. The Lead Pharmacy Technician (LPT) will manage pharmacy technicians, maintain stock control, ensure accurate record-keeping, and support pharmacists in their duties. This role involves a blend of direct patient care, administrative responsibilities, and collaboration with other hospital departments to ensure smooth operations and exceptional service. The LPT will work within the guidelines set by the State Board of Pharmacy, demonstrate leadership skills, and provide excellent customer service with compassion and efficiency.


Population Served:

This position involves direct patient care for individuals aged 18 and older. The Lead Pharmacy Technician should possess the necessary experience or specialized training to serve this population.


Position Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent is required.

  • Certification as a Pharmacy Technician with the state of California is required.

  • Ability to work efficiently under broad guidelines established by the State Board of Pharmacy for supportive personnel.

  • Strong judgment skills and the ability to make decisions in a fast-paced environment.

  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, and the ability to interact effectively with patients, staff, and physicians.

  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality and ensure a high level of accuracy in all tasks.

  • Ability to handle long periods of work with endurance and manage assigned work hours.


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Medication Management:

    • Input patient prescription data into the computer system accurately.

    • Support pharmacists in reviewing prescriptions and ensuring proper dispensing.

    • Maintain inventory levels and monitor medication supplies to ensure the pharmacy is well-stocked.



  • Team Supervision & Training:

    • Manage and supervise the daily activities of pharmacy technicians, ensuring compliance with department policies and efficient workflow.

    • Coordinate and provide training for pharmacy technicians, volunteers, and trainees.

    • Schedule pharmacy technicians, volunteers, and trainees for shifts to ensure adequate coverage.

    • Assist the Director of Pharmacy in recruitment and hiring processes, including conducting interviews and assisting with the disciplinary action of pharmacy technicians.



  • Administrative & Clerical Duties:

    • Organize and supervise administrative and clerical responsibilities, including accurate record-keeping and documentation.

    • Coordinate technician project days and tasks to ensure the smooth operation of pharmacy units.

    • Support the Director of Pharmacy by handling intricate clerical tasks to ease their workload.



  • Customer Service & Interdepartmental Collaboration:

    • Provide excellent customer service through compassion, professionalism, and efficiency.

    • Work closely with other hospital departments to resolve pharmacy-related questions or concerns.

    • Ensure all equipment is serviced annually and is in good working condition.



  • Support Pharmacists & Director of Pharmacy:

    • Provide ongoing support for the pharmacist on duty and the Director of Pharmacy in their daily responsibilities.

    • Assist the Director of Pharmacy with inventory management, supply ordering, and other administrative tasks as needed.



  • Compliance & Policy Adherence:

    • Ensure adherence to hospital policies, procedures, and State Board of Pharmacy guidelines.

    • Maintain confidentiality and ensure all patient data is handled securely and in compliance with HIPAA regulations.
