Job Description - Lead Power Electronics Development Engineer

Job Description Summary

The Lead Power Electronics Engineer focuses on the electrical design, simulation, and validation of advanced power electronic systems for Marine, Oil & Gas, Metals, and Industrial applications. This role includes developing real‑time models, specifying system components, designing converter topologies, and supporting drive software development and commissioning activities. Success in this position requires strong analytical capabilities and hands‑on experience with power electronics, control systems, and industrial drive technologies.

The Lead Power Electronics Engineer also performs activities aimed at proving concepts to be valid and technically feasible through the application of scientific and engineering methodologies. This work involves demonstrating, through testing and analysis, the performance and implementation potential of new system designs, converter topologies, and control strategies.

In addition, the Lead Power Electronics Engineer impacts the quality of their own work as well as the work of others on the team. The role includes executing standard operational and technical tasks that follow established instructions and work routines, with the flexibility to rearrange task sequences based on evolving project and work conditions.

Job Description

Roles and Responsibilities

Electrical System Simulation & System Design

  • Simulate and design complete power electronic systems for industrial applications, including marine propulsion, oil and gas facilities, metals rolling mills, and power generation plants.
  • Develop offline and real‑time electrical system simulations to support system design, performance evaluation, and engineering decision‑making.
  • Analyze system behavior under various operating conditions and propose design optimizations.

Electrical Component Specification

  • Specify electrical components for the overall power plant, including cables, filters, inductors, capacitors, transformers, converters, and protection devices.
  • Ensure component selection aligns with system requirements, standards, and environmental constraints.

Technical Documentation & Specifications

  • Write detailed project artifacts such as hardware specifications, controller functional requirements, and commissioning instructions.
  • Prepare test mode procedures and documentation for power electronic controllers and drive systems.

Drive/Converter Software & HMI Development

  • Develop control software for drives and converters, including HMI interfaces.
  • Validate and test software on laboratory test benches and Hardware‑in‑the‑Loop (HIL) real‑time platforms.
  • Troubleshoot and refine control algorithms to ensure robust performance in industrial environments.

Converter & Inverter Design

  • Design new Voltage Source Inverters (IGBT or SiC‑based) and new thyristor‑based converters such as LCI rectifiers.
  • Perform modeling, simulation, and validation of converter topologies and switching strategies.

Engineering Tools & Project Support

  • Develop technical engineering tools to support project teams in design, analysis, and commissioning.
  • Provide technical support during system integration, testing, and commissioning phases.

Drive Test, Validation & Commissioning

  • Support drive system testing and validation activities, ensuring compliance with design specifications and operational requirements.
  • Participate in on‑site or remote commissioning of drive systems, assisting with tuning, troubleshooting, and performance verification.

Required Qualifications

  • PhD with 2+ years' experience in Power Electronics
  • Understands physical phenomena; strong theoretical and mathematical background; with the ability to understand new concepts and ability to communicate information clearly
  • Creative, passionate and integrate into a team
  • Willingness to travel when needed

Desired Characteristics

  • Autonomous, curious with the ability to understand new concepts, coach other engineers, and integrate into a team
  • Experience on MMC, multilevel VSI, LCI, DC drives and Cycloconverter
  • Experience on Variable Speed application, STATCOM, or active filtering
  • Experience in Middle Voltage and High Voltage applications

For candidates applying to a U.S. based position, the pay range for this position is between $89,300.00 and $148,700.00. The Company pays a geographic differential of 110%, 120% or 130% of salary in certain areas. The specific pay offered may be influenced by a variety of factors, including the candidate’s experience, education, and skill set.

 

 

Bonus eligibility: discretionary annual bonus.
