Job Description - Lead Systems Safety & Reliability Engineer

Space is a warfighting domain. True Anomaly seeks those with the talent and ambition to build the technology that secures it.

OUR MISSION

True Anomaly delivers decisive capabilities for space superiority. We build autonomous spacecraft, advanced payloads, mission software, and space-based interceptors — enabling the U.S. and its Allies to secure the space environment and counter threats from the ultimate high ground.

OUR VALUES

  • Be the offset. We create asymmetric advantages with creativity and ingenuity.

  • What would it take? We challenge assumptions to deliver ambitious results.

  • It’s the people. Our team is our competitive advantage and we are better together.

YOUR MISSION

We are seeking a Systems Safety & Reliability Engineer to join our growing Systems Engineering team, playing a critical role in ensuring mission success and the safety of our spacecraft and ground systems. In this role, you will own and drive the reliability and safety engineering processes across the full system lifecycle — from concept development through operations. You will develop and maintain the enterprise reliability plan, lead safety and reliability analyses, and work across functional teams to embed a culture of rigor, resilience, and mission assurance into everything we build.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop, own, and maintain the enterprise reliability plan, establishing program-wide reliability goals, methods, processes, and metrics.

  • Lead and perform system safety analyses, including Failure Modes, Effects, and Criticality Analysis (FMEA/FMECA), Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), Hazard Analysis, and Safety Assessment Reports (SARs).

  • Conduct and support Orbital Debris Mitigation Standard Practices (ODMSP) analysis to ensure compliance with U.S. government space sustainability requirements and applicable regulations.

  • Perform reliability modeling and analysis, including reliability block diagrams (RBDs), Markov analysis, and probabilistic risk assessments (PRA) to quantify system reliability and availability.

  • Integrate reliability and safety requirements into the Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) environment, ensuring traceability from mission requirements through subsystem design.

  • Support requirements definition and decomposition for safety and reliability, ensuring allocations are flowed down to subsystem and component teams.

  • Collaborate with Systems Engineers, hardware, software, and test teams to identify failure modes and drive mitigation strategies into design.

  • Define and track key reliability metrics and mission success criteria throughout the program lifecycle.

  • Support design reviews (PDR, CDR, etc.), Engineering Review Boards (ERBs), and Failure Review Boards (FRBs) with safety and reliability data and analyses.

  • Develop and maintain safety and reliability-related documentation, including test plans, verification matrices, and closure evidence packages.

  • Assess mission and operational risks related to on-orbit performance, and propose credible mitigation and contingency strategies.

  • Interface with government agencies, customers, and range safety authorities on safety and reliability deliverables and compliance requirements.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Senior Level: 8+ years of experience in aerospace systems safety and/or reliability engineering on flight or space programs

  • Staff level: 12+ years of experience in aerospace systems safety and/or reliability engineering on flight or space programs

  • Principal level: 15+ years of experience in aerospace systems safety and/or reliability engineering on flight or space programs

  • Hands-on experience performing FMEA/FMECA, FTA, and related safety analyses on spacecraft, launch vehicles, or defense systems

  • Demonstrated experience with reliability analysis and modeling techniques, including RBDs, Markov models, or PRA

  • Working knowledge of ODMSP requirements and orbital debris compliance analysis

  • Experience with Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) tools (e.g., Cameo, Jama, Rhapsody) and integration of safety/reliability into system models

  • Strong background in systems engineering practices: requirements, verification, interface control, and failure analysis

  • Ability to work across hardware, software, and operations boundaries in a fast-paced, collaborative environment

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with demonstrated ability to present technical findings to diverse audiences

  • Bachelor's Degree in Aerospace, Mechanical, Systems Engineering, or related field

  • S. Citizen and eligible for DoD TS/SCI or TS/SAP U.S. government security clearance

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Advanced degree in Aerospace, Systems, or Reliability Engineering

  • Experience developing or leading an enterprise-level reliability program or mission assurance plan

  • Familiarity with MIL-STD-882 (System Safety), NASA-STD-8729.1, or similar safety and reliability standards

  • Background in range safety certification and safety approval processes

  • Active TS/SCI clearance

  • Experience with defense or classified space missions

  • Familiarity with U.S. DoD and NASA mission assurance standards and processes

  • Experience working with government agencies, primes, or subcontractors on space missions

COMPENSATION

  • Base Salary:

  • Senior: $145,000 - $245,000

  • Staff: $165,000 - $290,000

  • Principal: $180,000 - $305,000

  • Equity + Benefits including Health, Dental, Vision, HRA/HSA options, PTO and paid holidays, 401K, Parental Leave

Your actual level and base salary will be determined on a case-by-case basis and may vary based on the following considerations: job-related knowledge and skills, education, location, and experience.
