Job Description - Lead Test Automation Engineer

Symetra has an exciting new opportunity to join us as a Lead Test Automation Engineer!\n\nAbout the role\n\nAs a Lead Test Automation Engineer, you will elevate Symetra\u0027s quality engineering by delivering secure, high\u2011performing solutions and advancing our automation capabilities. You\u0027ll lead 2-3 automation engineers, shape modern frameworks and practices, and champion an automation\u2011first approach that strengthens CI/CD and boosts production readiness. You\u0027ll mentor talent, influence technical direction, and collaborate across teams to ensure we deliver consistently high\u2011quality, scalable systems.\n\nWhat you will do\n\n * Develop high\u2011quality, secure, performant code; lead and approve code reviews; define and monitor performance metrics; and ensure required test coverage and code quality gates are met.\n * Design, develop, and maintain extensible automated testing frameworks; integrate them into CI/CD to improve speed and stability; lead adoption of automation best practices; and track key automation health metrics to drive continuous quality improvements.\n * Contribute to system design and architecture; apply scalable design patterns; ensure alignment with security, performance, and resiliency standards; and partner with DevOps, Architecture, and Product to drive operational excellence and observability.\n * Design and support automated build and deployment pipelines; lead root\u2011cause analyses and implement preventative automation safeguards; and troubleshoot complex automation and framework issues across systems.\n * Mentor engineers and interns; serve as the automation subject matter expert across teams; and promote an inclusive culture grounded in Symetra\u0027s Core Values.\n\n\n\nWhy Work at Symetra\n\nHere\u0027s what some of our employees have to say about why they work at Symetra:\n\n\"I chose Symetra because I heard it was a pro-employee company--and it\u0027s absolutely true. Check out our Symetra Benefits Overview\n\n\n\nCompensation\n\nSalary Range: $128,700 - $214,600 plus eligibility for the company annual bonus program. \n\nWho You Are: \n\n * You have a high school diploma (required) and a bachelor\u0027s degree (or equivalent experience).\n * You have 9-12 years of relevant software engineering experience, including 6-10+ years of hands\u2011on test automation expertise.\n * Bring strong software design and development skills; deep expertise in automated testing across all layers; hands\u2011on experience with frameworks like Pytest, Selenium, Cypress, and Playwright; advanced API testing with tools like Postman; strong debugging and root\u2011cause analysis abilities; solid DevOps and continuous testing practices; and experience with cloud\u2011native testing across AWS, Azure, or GCP.\n * You have strong problem\u2011solving and decision\u2011making skills; communicate effectively with technical and non\u2011technical partners; manage and prioritize work to drive team improvements; and mentor engineers across varying skill levels.\n * Professional certifications in software engineering, automation, cloud, or DevOps are highly preferred.\n * Some minimal annual travel required (for people manager roles only)\n\n\n\nTravel:\n\n * Required Training \u0026 Professional Development \nAll newly hired people leaders with direct reports are required to complete a comprehensive leadership development program within their first year. This program includes both virtual and in-person training. The in-person sessions will take place at Symetra\u0027s corporate headquarters in Bellevue, Washington.
