Job Description - Legal Assistant - Collateral Litigation Section

KEY DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:
 



  • Monitor EM/ECF mailbox for post-conviction motions and manage all related email assignments. 



  • Research individual motions using case management systems and determine AUSA/Section assignment. 



  • Distribute 3582, 2255, and 2241 motions to assigned attorneys with all necessary documentation. 



  • Coordinate with other USAO Districts on incoming 2241s per DOJ protocols; manage assignment and communication workflows. 



  • Create and maintain
    accurate motion files in shared directories; update databases promptly.
     



  • Maintain inboxes and distribute documentation from courts, DOJ, and other legal personnel. 



  • Communicate proactively with AUSAs and staff regarding timelines, assignments, and motion-related inquiries. 



  • Conduct thorough legal and procedural research to support motion responses. 



  • Collect, organize, and evaluate case and statistical data to support reporting and litigation analysis. 



  • Draft and assemble detailed and accurate reports reflecting relevant findings. 



  • Support the Collateral Litigation Coordinator in miscellaneous legal administrative duties related to the unit’s caseload.  



EXPERIENCE and/or EDUCATION:
 



  • High school diploma ; post-secondary coursework in legal studies preferred. 



  • 3–5 years of experience in criminal legal support or administrative legal services. 



  • Demonstrated experience with motion tracking, filing deadlines, and docket research.  



KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES:
 



  • Strong working knowledge of criminal law and post-conviction processes. 



  • Proficiency with LexisNexis, Westlaw, PACER, CM/ECF, and Microsoft Office Suite. 



  • Strong organizational and multitasking skills with close attention to detail. 



  • Effective communication skills with internal legal teams and external court personnel. 



  • Ability to manage databases, draft correspondence, and generate motion tracking reports. 



  • Typing speed of at least 40 WPM. 



  • Familiarity with common office equipment and ability to perform routine operations such as scanning, copying, and filing. 



  • Analytical thinking to identify legislative gaps, duplications, or administrative issues.
