Job Description - Level 1 and Level 2 Detention Officer Supervisors

Currently, we are looking for FIVE (5) FULL-TIME LEVEL 1 SUPERVISORS AND FIVE (5) FULL-TIME LEVEL 2 SUPERVISORS IN TARRANT COUNTY, TEXAS! 


 


YOU WILL BE REQUIRED TO UNDERGO A FINGERPRINT-BASED CRIMINAL JUSTICE INFORMATION SERVICES (CJIS) BACKGROUND CHECK, A HUMAN RESOURCES CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECK, OR A SHERIFF'S CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECK.YOU WILL HAVE TO PROVIDE YOUR DATE OF BIRTH, A CLEAR COPY OF YOUR DRIVER'S LICENSE, AND A COPY OF YOUR SOCIAL SECURITY CARD.



YOU MUST ALSO BE ABLE TO PASS A DRUG TEST, AND REMAIN DRUG-FREE.



Position Description:



Level 1 and 2 Supervision– supervise confinement personnel engaged in all functions related to receiving and safely housing inmates confined within County jail facilities. Confinement Bureau supervisory duties include, but are not limited to, supervision of personnel assigned to classification, identification, release, court update, error resolution, TDC desk, grievance, inmate housing, and ancillary support functions.



Jails are staffed 24/7, including holidays. Tarrant County observes the following holidays each year:




  • New Year’s Day

  • Martin Luther King Jr. Day

  • President’s Day

  • Cesar Chavez Day

  • Good Friday

  • Memorial Day

  • Juneteenth

  • Independence Day

  • Labor Day

  • Thanksgiving Day

  • Day after Thanksgiving

  • Christmas Eve

  • Christmas Day



Essential Functions (Essential duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to):




  • Schedules assigned subordinate personnel

  • Conduct Watch Briefings

  • Assists superiors and/or designated personnel with administrative duties

  • Supervises operational activities of assigned subordinate personnel

  • Supervises preliminary investigations of all major incidents and crimes committed in jail facilities

  • Manages major incidents by establishing an on-site supervisory presence from which to coordinate and direct responding emergency personnel

  • Notifies superiors of major crimes, serious accidents, significant employee complaints, and other extraordinary happenings in a timely manner

  • Conducts personnel and equipment inspections

  • Supervises mandatory security checks and facility inspections

  • Monitors and enforces all Sheriff’s Office policies, procedures, and rules

  • Monitors policy compliance by subordinate personnel about their use of communications and information technology equipment

  • Evaluates the duty performance of assigned subordinate personnel

  • Utilizes information systems to perform essential duties, including incident investigations and review, use of resources, workload, and the creation/participation in documents and reports

  • Documents citizen and employee allegations of misconduct and initiates appropriate action(s) to investigate the complaint

  • Verifies that reports are accurate and legible

  • Assists subordinates as needed

  • Coordinates all unit activities and actions as needed

  • Provides court testimony as required

  • May coordinate and implement in-service training programs for department/unit employees to meet identified training needs

  • Must maintain physical fitness to perform the essential duties of the position

  • Uses reasonable force when necessary

  • Must work assigned duty hours

  • Must enforce all applicable rules and regulations of the given position

  • Must complete mandatory paperwork

  • Must produce legal documents as required by assigned duties

  • Performs all other related duties as assigned, as needed, including duties required of subordinate Detention Officer personnel

  • Must have and continually maintain a TCOLE Jailer’s License



Skills - the following skills must be demonstrated by a level of proficiency or achieved within a normal period:




  • Must have good interpersonal and public relations skills

  • Must be able to understand, interpret, and properly apply court orders, relevant State statutes and administrative rules, including Jail Standards, and other policies and procedures required to perform essential job duties of the position assigned

  • Must be able to prepare official documents required to perform assigned functions, including but not limited to forms, affidavits, incident reports, and inmate processing documents

  • Must be proficient in the use of defensive tactics requiring physical force, including the use of intermediate impact weapons and firearms, if required

  • A TCOLE Jailer’s Firearm Certification is required to qualify for this job duty.

  • Ability to actively listen by aggressively practicing good listening techniques

  • Ability to use interpersonal skills to foster positive working relationships with team members (peers, supervisors, and other providers) is required to provide superior services in the public interest

  • Ability to take appropriate action to accomplish assigned duties and accept accountability for outcomes

  • Ability to use appropriate physical force when imminently necessary to prevent death or serious bodily injury to others or self



Knowledge – the following knowledge is required to perform essential job functions relevant to assigned positions:




  • Must have a working knowledge of the Code of Criminal Procedure, Penal Code, State Jail Standards, and other State statutes and County ordinances

  • Must have a strong working knowledge of applicable policies, including, but not limited to, TCSO policies, Civil Service Rules, Standard Operating Procedures, and the Tarrant County Handbook

  • Must have a working knowledge of department organization and functions

  • Must have a working knowledge needed to use basic Microsoft Office software functions



Required Qualifications:




  • Basic Texas Jailer License (TCOLE) required. A temporary Jailer's license is not acceptable

  • Intermediate Texas Jailer License preferred

  • Basic Texas Peace Officer certification preferred

  • Three (3) years of Detention Officer experience

  • High school diploma or GED required

  • Associate degree preferred, but not required

  • US Citizen

  • Valid Driver’s License

  • 18 years of age and older



Work Conditions:




  • In jails and correctional centers within Tarrant County
