Reports to: Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction and Building Administrators
Evaluation: As defined by PERA requirements
Work Calendar: Full-Time, 186 work days or as per association agreement
Position Goal: To to create library and media center spaces that are integral component of the school’s instructional program and to provide and maintain a comprehensive and full spectrum of educational materials and resources in the media center for each student to access relative to the interest, ability and level of maturity of the student; to empower students to be critical thinkers, enthusiastic readers, skillful researchers, and discerning, technologically literate, ethical users of information.
The Library Media Specialist shall be responsible for the following duties and other
responsibilities as assigned by building administrators/Superintendent/Assistant
Superintendents:
Superintendent/Board:
Observe and adhere to all Board of Education policies and regulations, and all administrative rules and procedures
Attend Board meetings when necessary to provide supportive materials and information
Follow all State of Illinois codes relative to the requirements of the Library Media Center including copyright law and intellectual freedom
Communicate program initiatives and objectives to the Administration, Staff and Community
Serve as chairperson of the District committee on parental complaints of library and instructional materials
Provide reports when requested or required
Building:
Create a school “learning commons” in the Library/Media Centers at 3 schools (Pre-K-8) , by developing and administering an integrated school library media program.
Instruct students and staff in effective use of the library/media center, developing and enhancing information and technology literacy skills, and in the use of equipment.
Evaluate, select and procure print and digital resources and related equipment, and develop procedures to ensure efficient operation, services, and facility use for a 21st century school library media program.
Assist in planning and implementing an information and technology literacy skills curriculum integrated with subject area curriculum through partnerships with teachers.
Provide leadership and guidance for effectively integrating technologies with instruction to create 21st century instructional strategies.
Develop knowledge of curriculum in all subject areas.
Instruct teachers, administrators, and other staff in the use of new information technologies.
Recommend and procure resources for staff for use in meeting their instructional objectives.
Maintain an effective and efficient system to facilitate access, delivery, and retrieval of all materials and equipment housed in the Library Media Center
Catalog new materials and maintain an up-to-date catalog of all print and non-print materials
Complete an annual inventory of all materials and equipment
Provide leadership and guidance in related library budget development and expenditures
Promote recreational reading through the use of the District and community libraries
Secure and maintain audio visual materials, equipment and supplies
Assist in the evaluation, selection and requisition of electronic resources
Collaborate with administration, the other Library/Media Specialist, and staff for the efficient scheduling of the Library Media Center facility
Personnel:
Provide assistance to staff and teachers relative to the application of computer programs, integration of research, information retrieval, and literature appreciation into the classroom
Provide leadership to the library aides relative to the library, computer programs, literature collection, film, video, professional library and centralized library collection
Provide leadership in the development, advertising, and offering of library related in-service workshops and classes
Students:
Provide assistance to students in the application of media resources
Instruct students in how to use the materials, resources, and information retrieval
Use a variety of materials and activities to stimulate and maximize learning for student achievement
Instruct students on how to use the library/media center for research of topics
Individual:
Exhibit confidentiality in relation to students, parents and faculty
Develop a positive working relationship with administration, staff, students and parents
Assume responsibility for personal and professional growth and development by attending meetings, workshops, conferences and continuing education classes as related to Library Media services and education
Remain current on effective teaching practices, techniques and learning strategies, literature, new research findings and technology, testing and data collection
Adhere to the new PERA law and Senate Bill 7 which describes the Illinois Learning Standards and requirements for good teaching
Be knowledgeable of and adhere to the District Safety Plan
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree with media or library science certification and valid Illinois Teaching License teaching experience at the elementary level; high level of computer and multimedia technology skills
