Job Summary

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Substance Abuse Counselor to join our team. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in providing support and guidance to individuals struggling with substance use disorders. This role involves conducting assessments, developing treatment plans, providing ongoing individual and group counseling and support for adult community and currently incarcerated clients with drug and/or alcohol dependence. Responsible for managing and coordinating client care and facilitating therapy sessions to promote recovery and well-being. The Substance Abuse Counselor will work collaboratively with clients, families, and other healthcare professionals to ensure comprehensive care.

Work Environment

Work is generally performed in an office setting and will include working inside Nevada Department of Corrections facilities a minimum of three days per week.

Job Duties & Responsibilities:

Client Meetings

• Facilitates meetings with clients to obtain personal, family, medical, psychological, and legal information to complete a drug and alcohol assessment.
• Consults with other professionals and/or family members (with signed release of information) to get a clear picture of the client’s problems.
• Conducts group and individual counseling sessions and educational classes.
• Schedules sessions and classes as deemed appropriate to meet clients’ needs outlined in the treatment plan.
• Provide psychotherapy and counseling services, utilizing evidence-based practices such as motivational interviewing.
• Facilitate group therapy sessions to encourage peer support and shared experiences among clients.
• Engage in child family counseling when appropriate, addressing the needs of clients within their family dynamics.
• A compassionate approach with a commitment to helping others achieve their recovery goals.
• Assist clients in developing coping strategies and life skills necessary for recovery.
• Proficiency in conducting group therapy sessions and individual psychotherapy.

Develops Treatments Plans & Knowledge

• Understands and has knowledge of twelve-step recovery program. Educate clients about community-based organizations such as AA, NA, etc.
• Adheres to all healthcare standards as related to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
• Knowledge of community resources for substance abuse treatment and recovery support.

Client Case Files

• Maintains a confidential case file on all clients with whom contact is made.
• Charts and documents client progress in electronic health record.
• Meets with case management to coordinate services for clients as needed.
• Maintain accurate medical records and documentation of client progress in accordance with regulatory standards.

Client Assessments

• Conduct thorough patient assessments to identify substance use issues and develop individualized treatment plans.
• Strong skills in patient assessment, coding for medical records, and documentation practices.

Agencies and Special Events

• Maintains communication with coordinating agencies, such as court, probation, or social services.
• Assists in planning, coordinating, and scheduling special events and community outreach.

Knowledge, Abilities, Skills, and Certifications

• Knowledge of records management procedures. Ability to maintain confidentiality.
• Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local regulatory laws and regulations including established professional standards.
• Knowledge of physical, emotional, and social needs of substance abusers.
• Knowledge of community resources for substance abusers.
• Ability to utilize other community resources and health care agencies.

Education and Certification Requirements

• A bachelor's degree in psychology, social work, human services, or a related field is required; relevant certifications or licensure as a counselor is required.
• Two years’ (2) experience in addictive disorders.
• MUST HAVE LICENSE/Certified Alcohol & Drug Counselor Certificate (CADC).
• A valid Nevada driver’s license or capable of obtaining one within thirty-days (30) of employment.
