Job Description - Licensed Practical Nurse or Registered Nurse Orthopedics

We are seeking a dedicated and skilled Nurse to join our team and work alongside our orthopedic surgeons in delivering world-class care. 


 


Position Summary 


The Nurse is an essential member of the clinical team, responsible for assisting orthopedic surgeons during procedures, coordinating surgical schedules, and ensuring optimal patient care before, during, and after surgery. This role requires a combination of clinical expertise, organizational precision, and compassionate patient interaction. 


 


Key Responsibilities 


Preoperative Care: 



  • Conduct detailed preoperative assessments, including reviewing medical histories, current medications, and surgical risks. 



  • Educate patients and families about the surgical process, postoperative expectations, and care plans. 



  • Coordinate with scheduling staff, surgeons, and patients to ensure timely and accurate surgical bookings. 



  • Verify availability of operating rooms, required equipment, and surgical team members for scheduled procedures. 


Scheduling Surgical Procedures: 



  • Collaborate with patients, families, and the surgical team to schedule procedures based on medical urgency, surgeon availability, and patient needs. 



  • Coordinate with hospital or surgical center staff to confirm operating room availability and ensure all pre-surgical preparations are complete. 



  • Manage and communicate any scheduling changes, delays, or adjustments to patients, surgeons, and the care team promptly and professionally. 



  • Ensure that all required preoperative diagnostics and clearances are completed in a timely manner to avoid delays. 


Intraoperative Assistance (on an as needed basis): 



  • Assist the surgical team by preparing the operating room, ensuring all instruments and equipment are sterilized and ready. 



  • Provide hands-on support to the orthopedic surgeon 



  • Monitor patient vitals and communicate any concerns to the surgical and anesthesia teams. 



  • Handle unexpected clinical situations effectively, ensuring patient safety. 


Postoperative Care: 



  • Collaborate with the orthopedic surgeon to oversee patient recovery, including monitoring vitals, administering medications within licensing guidelines, and assessing for potential complications. 



  • Perform wound care, dressing changes, and assess surgical sites for signs of infection or complications. 



  • Educate patients on postoperative care plans, mobility techniques, physical therapy requirements, and follow-up schedules. 


Clinical Duties: 



  • Provide routine orthopedic care in the clinical setting, including: 



  • Assisting with joint injections, casting, splinting, and dressing applications. 



  • Conducting routine follow-up assessments for postoperative and non-surgical patients. 



  • Removing sutures, staples, and monitoring for healing progress. 



  • Administer prescribed medications, injections, and IV therapy as needed all within licensing guidelines. 



  • Maintain accurate and thorough documentation of patient interactions, including surgical notes, recovery progress, and clinical evaluations. 



  • Assist with pre-surgical testing such as X-rays, blood draws, or other diagnostic evaluations. 


Team Collaboration: 



  • Work closely with the orthopedic surgeon, anesthesiologists, surgical technologists, physical therapists, Radiologic Technologists, and other medical staff to provide holistic patient care. 



  • Participate in team meetings and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives for surgical and clinical practices. 


 


Qualifications 



  • Current LPN or RN license in Wyoming. 



  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in surgical or orthopedic nursing. 



  • Expertise in sterile techniques, surgical instrumentation, and orthopedic procedures. 



  • Strong clinical skills, including wound care, bracing, and injection administration. 



  • Exceptional organizational and time-management abilities, especially in scheduling. 



  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills. 



  • Ability to multitask and remain composed under high-pressure situations.
