Description

The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in the ambulatory surgery center provides direct patient care under the supervision of a professional Registered Nurse (RN) or physician, with a focus on IV therapy services within the LPN scope of practice as defined by the Mississippi Board of Nursing.  This role requires a high degree of precision, attention to detail, and a committment to patient safety in a fast-paced surgical environment.



Responsibilities

  • IV Therapy Administration:

    • Initiate peripheral IV catheters in superficial peripheral veins

    • Administer Board-approved IV solutions and IV medications via the peripheral route (excluding IV push/bolus medications other than those for plasma volume expansion, blood products, or chemotherapeutic agents)

    • Monitor and adjust IV solution flow rates as prescribed

    • Perform routine saline flushes to maintain patency of peripheral intermittent vascular access devices

    • Discontinue IV therapy and remove peripheral IV catheters


  • Patient Care and Monitoring:

    • Monitor patient responses to IV therapy, reporting any complications or adverse reactions immediately to the supervising RN or physician

    • Collect patient data and assist the RN with planning, implementing, and evaluating the plan of care

    • Perform general nursing duties, including monitoring vital signs, lab tests, and procedures, reporting results to provider as needed.  Assisting with pre and post -operative patient needs and documentation of care provided

    • Maintain accurate patient records (e.g., charts, schedules, procedures, medication history)


  • Collaboration and Education:

    • Communicate and collaborate effectively with the healthcare team and patient/family

    • Educate patients and family members in accordance with the established plan of care

    • Participate in ongoing educational activities to maintain and enhance competency in IV therapy and general nursing practices


  • Supervision:

    • Must be able to work under the supervision of a RN or physician who is physically on the premises where patient care is provided


  • Limitations (Not within LPN scope of practice in MS)

    • Inserting or removing Central Venous Access Devices (CVADs), including PICC lines

    • Administering IV drugs via direct IV push/bolus (other than approved boluses for plasma volume expansion)

    • Administering blood or blood components

    • Adminsitering the first dose of a new IV medication




Qualifications

  • Required Education and Certification:

    • Graduation from a state-approved practical nursing program

    • A valid, active Mississippi LPN license

    • Successful completion of a Board-approved IV therapy course or an IV therapy integrated accredited nursing program, with documented evidence of education and competency


  • Required Skills and Experience:

    • Demonstrated knowledge and skill in IV therapy procedures within the LPN scope of practice in Mississippi

    • Strong attention to detail, knowledge of infection control protocols, and excellent communication skills

    • Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented surgical environment
