Life Support Systems (LSS) Technician

Position Summary

The Life Support Systems Technician is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and monitoring of aquatic life support systems to ensure optimal water quality and habitat conditions for the animal collection. This role involves working closely with animal care staff to support the health and well-being of aquatic species.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Operate and maintain all aquatic life support and most circulation systems to meet required water quality standards.


• Perform testing and monitoring of water quality parameters such as water chemistry, disinfection, clarity, and temperature.


• Monitor and adjust life support system components, including pumps, filters, ozone generators, and UV sterilizers.


• Conduct routine inspections and preventive maintenance on life support equipment.


• Troubleshoot and repair mechanical, electrical, and automated control equipment related to life support systems.


• Collaborate with animal care and veterinary staff to ensure the highest standards of animal care and welfare.


• Maintain accurate records of system performance, maintenance activities, and water quality data.


• Ensure compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards, including those set by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA)

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent; associate or bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, environmental science, or a related field preferred.


• Minimum of four years of experience in aquatic life support systems or a related field.


• Knowledge of water chemistry, filtration systems, and aquatic animal husbandry.


• Ability to read and interpret technical manuals and schematics.


• Proficiency in using hand and power tools for maintenance and repair tasks.


• Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.


• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.


• Willingness to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays, as needed.​

Certifications

• Level 1 Life Support Operator Certification from the American Association of Life Support Operators (AALSO) within 18 months of appointment.​

Physical Requirements

• Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.


• Comfortable working in wet, humid, and noisy environments.


• Ability to climb ladders and work in confined spaces.


• Capable of standing, walking, and performing manual labor for extended periods.
