Job Description

Job Summary

Assist management by providing services including, but not limited to, discussing work content, assignment of personnel, reviewing work, vacation scheduling, planning of work, ensuring accuracy of appropriate paperwork and determining equipment requirements. Supervises and assists employees engaged in the operations, construction and maintenance of gas and electric facilities, replacement of cable and telephone and other related work as required. Assistance to include hands on work, in accordance to collective bargaining agreement language.

What you will do
  • Serve as a role model to the crew/team in attitude, promotion of harmony, safety, productivity, communications, work ethics, emergency response, and business decision-making. Coach employees on their performance on these aspects of their job.
  • Perform the duties of journeyman in the respective classification, when collective bargaining agreement language applies.
  • Supervise personnel in safe construction of distribution and transmission systems.
  • Perform tailgate sessions, (assess/discuss hazards of job and personal protection equipment required, etc. Ensure all crewmembers sign (if required) job-briefing form.
  • Lead by example – wear personal protective equipment (safety glasses, ear plugs, hard hats, etc.).
  • Model behavior to improve safety performance (e.g. lead and participate in stretching, lead safety meetings/safety talks, etc).
  • Know safety rules/practices, regulations, and operating procedures and see that they are followed.
  • Enforce safety by observing employees performing the work. Point out and correct at-risk behavior.
  • Inform supervisor when employee continually fails to follow safety rules, work in a safe manner, or use proper tools, personal protective equipment (PPE), and equipment.
  • Promote teamwork to maximize safety and productivity.
  • Responsible for the productivity of employees under his/her supervision. Manage your employees, as your own business.
  • Be personally responsible and accountable for productivity and quality of workmanship.
  • Tools and safety equipment – manage costs (loss, misuse, breakage, proper care, etc.)
  • Monitor and discuss performance/productivity issues (positive and negative) with employees. Personally take action to correct and improve. Inform supervisor when employee continually fails to meet productivity or performance measures.
  • Plan work to eliminate barriers, improve productivity, and maximize resources assigned.
  • Continually strive to reduce costs.
  • Train, develop and evaluate apprentices.
  • Seek feedback on personal performance through one-on-one coaching session with management.
  • Coach and mentor employees to improve technical skills, safety practices, teamwork, planning, and safety of their work practices. Provide constructive feedback. Discuss performance issues with employees. Reinforce desired individual behavior.
  • Develop technical ability (their own and employees under their supervision) i.e., continuous line training, standards, etc.
  • Make good business decisions. Manage resources assigned to you - people, equipment and dollars.
  • Monitor cellular phone usage
  • Oversee equipment operation, and maintenance necessary for the job.
  • Assure vehicles are fully utilized on the project and shared across projects.
  • Oversee and or complete paperwork timely and accurately to include but not limited to; mapping, timekeeping, safety reports, material issues, and returns for each individual job.
  • Ensure accuracy of appropriate paper work & complete as required (STORMS orders, tailgate forms, vehicle inspections, crew time sheets, and etc.)
  • Act as Company liaison with customers, contractors and other pertinent individuals. Manage customer interactions to promote good relations.
  • Treat employees, peers, customers and vendors in an honest, ethical, and professional manner.
  • Communicate effectively with management and coworkers alike. Inform managers when problems continue after you have addressed and tried to resolve issue.
  • Coordinate work with other departments and work as a team.
  • Manage assets in their charge (e.g. periodic inspections, daily pre-trip inspections, 30-day inspection forms, etc.)
  • Demonstrates proper knowledge of constructions standards and application.
  • Knowledge of union contract.
  • Proactively address employee downtime that is non-productive.
  • Examples:
  • lunch/coffee breaks shall be taken at job-site
  • no company transportation shall be used to buy lunch
  • assign productive work for crew on inclement days.
  • sick time & tardiness.
  • inform employees when these are not followed
  • inform supervisor if a problem continues
  • Under stand objectives of the business unit and vision of the company. Actions should support attainment of objectives. Communicate goals to employees assigned and execute work consistent with business unit objectives. Share performance measures with employee.
  • Perform other duties, which are similar, related or incidental to this position and assist in other activities that do not require skills of a higher classification.
  • Must report to work fit for duty and free from the effects of drug & alcohol abuse.
  • This classification requires a CDL and will be subject to drug and alcohol testing according to Federal and DOT regulations.

Education Requirements
  • High School Diploma Required
  • Other Line School graduate Required

Required Experience
  • Training in Powerline Design and Construction Program.
  • 5 years experience in line construction field.
 
    Other Requirements
    • Obtain and maintain Class "A" CDL and a valid driver's license
    • This classification shall have a twenty (20) minute residency requirement.

    • Ability to exercise good judgment during emergencies
    • Capacity for accurate decisions and execution
    • Ability to remain calm in emergency situations
    • Good verbal and written communication skills
    • High degree of analytical ability, high level of interpersonal skills
    • Familiar with all company policies and procedures
    • Basic knowledge of First Aid and CPR
    • Ability to read and comprehend Right To Know information
    • Will be required to work irregular hours during storm emergencies and as needed
