Job Description - Literacy Interventionist (Application Deadline: 4/7)

Position Description


The Literacy Interventionist helps ensure that every student develops the reading skills necessary for long-term academic success by providing targeted intervention, strengthening educator practice, partnering with families, and using data to drive meaningful improvement in literacy outcomes across the school. This role provides structured, evidence-based reading instruction to students, with a focus on strengthening foundational literacy, aligned to Common Core State Standards. In addition to direct student support, the Literacy Interventionist plays a key role in strengthening the school’s overall literacy program by contributing to professional development for educators, collaborating with teachers and families, and analyzing student data. 


This position reports to the School Principal and receives support from the Managing Director, Learning Innovation. 


Targeted Literacy Intervention (60%)




  • Provide targeted literacy instruction and intervention to students through 1:1 and small group instruction, particularly for students who are below grade-level in reading.




  • Implement targeted instructional strategies to strengthen foundational literacy skills, including phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.




  • Use structured, systematic intervention approaches aligned to the science of reading (using adopted curricular materials) to accelerate student reading growth.




  • Use ongoing formative assessment and progress monitoring to evaluate the effectiveness of interventions and adjust instructional strategies as needed.




  • Differentiate intervention lessons based on students’ specific skill gaps identified through assessment data.




  • Collaborate with classroom teachers to reinforce intervention strategies within core literacy instruction and ensure alignment between intervention and classroom learning.




Professional Development (20%)




  • Contribute to planning and facilitation of literacy-focused professional development, including summer professional development, weekly professional development, grade level team meetings and student free professional development days. 




  • Design and facilitate professional development sessions focused on effective literacy instruction and intervention strategies for various groups of educators including teachers, instructional aides, and City Year corps members. 




  • Provide guidance and resources to teachers on differentiating literacy instruction and supporting struggling readers in the classroom.




  • Model effective literacy strategies and instructional practices for educators




  • Contribute to the development and refinement of the school’s literacy systems and intervention structures.




Family Communication & Partnership (10%)




  • Establish consistent and proactive communication with families of students receiving literacy  intervention to share progress, goals, and strategies for continued growth.




  • Provide families with clear, practical guidance on how to support their child’s reading development at home, including modeling literacy strategies and sharing structured practice activities.




  • Facilitate workshops, information sessions, or small group meetings for families focused on building foundational literacy skills and fostering a love of reading at home.




  • Develop and share family-friendly materials that reinforce key literacy skills being addressed during intervention.




  • Participate in Student Success Conferences (SSCs) and Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) meetings with parents and families to share strategies for reading success.  




  • Partner with school leadership and teachers to ensure families are informed about the school’s literacy program and intervention supports.




Data Analysis & Progress Monitoring (10%)




  • Analyze school-wide literacy data, including i-Ready, DIBELS, and Interim Assessment Benchmarks, to identify students in need of intervention and track overall trends.




  • Support the school leadership team in developing data-driven plans to improve reading outcomes.




  • Facilitate regular data meetings with teachers during grade level team meetings as needed and PD time to review student progress and refine instructional strategies.

  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders.




  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills.

  • Strong knowledge of evidence-based early literacy practices




  • Ability to analyze student data and use it to inform instruction and intervention




  • Strong organizational skills




Qualifications




  • Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree preferred




  • At least 3 years of teaching experience (5+ preferred), with a demonstrated record of exceptional academic outcomes for scholars




  • Valid Multiple Subject or Single Subject English California teaching credential required




  • Experience teaching literacy




  • Demonstrated expertise in literacy development and reading intervention strategies




  • Experience facilitating professional development is preferred




  • Criminal clearance, including fingerprints and TB Test





Salary 


Equitas teacher salary scale


This position will return to work one week before the beginning of professional development (7/27/26) and will be expected to stay after school as needed (on average 2 hours per week) for meetings and preparation. In recognition of this additional time investment, the Literacy Interventionist will receive a 5% on top of their base salary.
