Location: Hattie Mae White \n\nDepartment: Critical Shortage \n\nArea:Northwest \n\nContract Months:10 \n\nSalary Range: $73,000.00 \u2013 $95,000.00 \n\nAcademic Year: 26-27 \n\n## POSITION SUMMARY\n\nAs a Literacy Success Teacher of a New Education System (NES) School, you will have the extraordinary opportunity to make a lasting impact on the lives of students who require targeted literacy support and contribute to shaping a better future. This role is focused on accelerating student growth and achievement in reading, particularly for students who are below grade level. \nYour primary objective is to deliver high-impact, data-driven literacy intervention through systematic, explicit instruction grounded in research-based practices aligned to the Science of Reading. You will facilitate a structured and supportive learning environment that builds foundational reading skills, including phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, and academic vocabulary. \nYou will use data to identify student needs, monitor progress, and adjust instruction to ensure measurable growth. Your ability to deliver targeted intervention, collaborate with school staff, and connect with diverse learners will contribute to closing literacy gaps and ensuring all students develop the skills necessary for long-term academic success.\n\n## ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES\n\n1\\. Plan and implement targeted literacy intervention that, as much as possible, meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of assigned students. \n2\\. Provide systematic, explicit instruction in foundational reading skills, including phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, and vocabulary development, aligned to district curriculum and state standards. \n3\\. Deliver structured literacy interventions to support struggling readers, including English learners and students requiring Tier 2 and Tier 3 support. \n4\\. Use student data to identify needs, group students strategically, and monitor progress toward literacy goals on a regular basis. \n5\\. Maintain accurate and complete documentation of intervention plans, student progress, and outcomes in alignment with district expectations.\n\n## ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES CONTINUED\n\n6\\. Create a learning environment that is structured, supportive, and conducive to building student confidence, motivation, and independence in reading. \n7\\. Prepare and deliver lessons that reflect accommodations for individual differences and are responsive to student progress data. \n8\\. Collaborate with classroom teachers, specialists, and administrators to support student literacy development and align intervention with core instruction. \n9\\. Communicate student progress effectively with parents, families, and school stakeholders, maintaining open and ongoing communication. \n10\\. Assist the administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct. Develop reasonable expectations for student behavior and maintain an orderly learning environment in a fair and consistent manner. \n11\\. Make provisions for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes when required. \n12\\. Maintain accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulations. \n13\\. Take necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities. \n14\\. Maintain and improve professional competence in literacy instruction, intervention strategies, and evidence-based reading practices. \n15\\. Participate in district and campus staff development and attend staff meetings as required. \n16\\. Maintain a professional relationship with colleagues and contribute to a collaborative school culture. \n17\\. Other duties as assigned.\n\n## POSITION REQUIREMENTS\n\nTYPE OF SKILL AND/OR REQUIRED LICENSING/CERTIFICATION \nNone \nLEADERSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES \nNo supervisory or direct people management responsibilities. May provide occasional work guidance, technical advice, and training to staff. \nWORK COMPLEXITY/INDEPENDENT JUDGMENT \nWork involves the application of moderately complex procedures and tasks that are quite varied. Independent judgment is often required to select and apply the most appropriate of available resources. Ongoing supervision is provided on an \"as needed\" basis. \nBUDGET AUTHORITY \nNo budget development activity is required.\n\n## Education\n\nBachelor\u2019s degree from an accredited college or university is required. \n\n## Experience\n\nPrior teaching experience in a similar role preferred. \n*Applicants who do not meet these work experience qualifications may be considered if they have a unique combination of education and work experience that may meet requirements for a school district permit. \n\n## Other Requirements\n\nPROBLEM SOLVING \nDecisions are made on routine matters affecting few individuals and usually within the confines of the job\u0027s own department. Specific job activities and results are typically reviewed closely. There are limited requirements for developing new ideas or changes in methods, procedures, or services. \nIMPACT OF DECISIONS \nFollows rules and procedures. Decisions can have minimal or no impact to HISD. Errors can be readily detected, usually by the employee, and, if made, would result in minor expense for correction. \nCOMMUNICATION/INTERACTIONS \nCollaborate and solve problems - work with others to resolve problems, clarify, or interpret complex information/policies, and provide initial screening/negotiations without approval authority. Interactions are typically with customers, senior level professional staff, and managers. \nCUSTOMER RELATIONSHIPS \nTakes routine or required customer actions to meet customer needs. Responds promptly and accurately to customer complaints, inquiries and requests for information and coordinates appropriate follow-up. May handle escalated issues passed on from coworkers or subordinates. \nWORKING/ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS \nWork is normally performed in a typical interior school environment. Duties may include participation in extended-day programming and supervision of students during experiential or campus-wide activities. \nAbility to carry and/or lift less than 15 pounds.\n\nHouston Independent School District is an equal opportunity employer. \n
