POSITION: Litigation Paralegal


FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt


DEPARTMENT: Paralegal


SUPERVISOR: Office Paralegal Manager


SUMMARY:


Qualified candidates should possess strong organizational skills in the management of paper and electronic files and the ability to manage work for multiple attorneys and cases with discerning attention to detail.  Litigation responsibilities include, but are not limited to, fact finding and investigations, preparation of medical summaries, drafting, editing, and cite-checking pleadings, preparing and responding to discovery, preparing and attending depositions, hearings, mediations, and trials, and assisting in all facets of post-trial work.  Previous experience recording billable time is required, as is proficiency in Adobe Acrobat, Excel, Word, and state and federal e-filing programs.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES


Essential functions are primarily job duties that incumbents must be able to perform unassisted or with some reasonable accommodation made by the employer.



  • Follows the ethical requirements as set forth by the Rules of Professional Conduct of the state in which the office is located.

  • Reviews and analyzes cases in order to assist in preparation of case for trial.

  • Reviews and analyzes matters for the purpose of preparing matter evaluation and status reports to clients.

  • Drafts complaints and answers, routine notices, affidavits, motions and petitions.

  • Establishes, organizes and maintains pleading boards, attorney trial notebooks, expert witness notebooks, document indexes and lists.

  • Locates and confers with expert witnesses and resource people. Arranges for expert witness inspections and obtains approval from counsel of record and specified parties.

  • Conducts research and locates cases, depositions, opinions, reports and information related to the matter.

  • Contacts and interviews parties, witnesses and experts, including the obtaining of written statements from witnesses.

  • Reviews and outlines depositions, indexes and summarizes documents.

  • Utilizes computerized litigation techniques and software when applicable.

  • Assists in preparation of the case for trial by drafting and preparing: Pre-trial Orders, Form Instructions to the Jury, Requested Voir Dire of Jurors, Conduct Jury Investigation, Prepare Witness and Exhibit Lists, Motions in Limine and Subpoena and contacts witnesses.

  • Assists in the trial of the case including scheduling of witnesses and controls and tracks exhibits.

  • Enters billable time in the Firm’s time keeping system for the above listed duties.

  • Physical presence in the office is an essential duty of this position.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED



  • Knowledge of legal principles and practices at a level normally acquired through formal paralegal training or its equivalent.

  • Ability to organize and prioritize numerous tasks and complete them under time constraints.

  • Ability to proofread typed material for contextual, grammatical, typographical or spelling errors.

  • Interpersonal skills necessary in order to communicate and follow the instruction of their assigned attorney and provide information to everyone with ordinary courtesy and tact.

  • Work occasionally requires a high level of mental effort and strain while organizing and maintaining multiple cases.

  • Ability to retrieve and distribute print volumes, push and pull carts and carry books weighing up to 20 pounds.

  • Work occasionally requires more than 40 hours per week to perform the essential duties of the position.

  • Ability to travel to private and public buildings, locally and statewide, via private or public conveyance to assist attorney in attending to client needs on legal matters.


WORKING CONDITIONS


Normal office environment with little exposure to excessive noise, dust, extreme temperatures and the like.
