Job Description - Loan Counselor

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Hours of Work: Monday - Friday 8:00a-5:00p

Reports to: Loan Supervisor

Pay Grade: 8; $24.00 - $27.00 an Hour

ROLE

Assists and services members in a professional and courteous manner as a “front-line public relations representative”. Prepares and properly maintains records of all necessary membership loan information. Interviews and counsels’ members applying for consumer loans. Possesses thorough knowledge of loan policies, procedures, and regulations relating to lending.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Interviews, prepares loan applications, counsels, and appraises the financial need of loan applicants. Evaluates loan applications with the authority appointed as loan officers and their delegated powers to approve or disapprove loans, line of credit or advances from lines of credit as designated in Gather's policies and procedures. Completes loan procedures for approved or denied loans. Conducts loan closing meetings with members, which includes obtaining proper signatures, disbursement of loan proceeds, and all applicable disclosure requirements. Approves loans as authorized by Gather's policies and procedures. Upon executing documents as approving loan officer, ensures that loans approved are in compliance with all Gather lending policies. Maintains approved loan minutes and submits to Loan Review Committee on a timely basis for analysis and compliance spot-check.

Provides counseling to members who are referred as a result of collection activities.

Reviews loan documents and ensures that loan applications are properly prepared and in compliance with loan policies and procedures prior to filing.

20%

Maintains current and thorough knowledge of lending regulations, policies and procedures and properly answers member and staff inquiries relating to the credit union’s lending requirements.

Maintains knowledge of credit union programs, products and services in order to provide accurate information, properly answer inquiries and to perform cross selling to existing and potential members.

15%

Performs necessary file maintenance relating to all shares and accounts and other related services such as payroll deduction or direct deposit.

5%

May be required to serve as Notary Republic.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Must comply with all company policies and procedures, applicable laws and regulations, including but not limited to, the Bank Secrecy Act, the Patriot Act, and the Office of Foreign Assets Control.

Requirements

Experience

Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration or related field, from an accredited college or university; or an Associate’s degree in Business or related field, from an accredited college plus two (2) years credit granting experience in a financial institution; or High School graduate plus four (4) years of credit granting experience in a financial institution.

Education/Certifications/Licenses

A high school degree or GED is required.

Interpersonal Skills

A significant level of trust and diplomacy is required to be an effective subject matter expert in the position. In-depth dialogues, conversations and explanations with members, direct and indirect reports and outside vendors of a sensitive and/or highly confidential nature is a normal part of the day-to-day experience. Communications can involve motivating, influencing, educating and/or advising others on matters of significance.

Other Skills

Ability to calculate figures and amounts, such as discounts, interest, percentages, rates, ratio, and yields.

Physical Requirements

Perform primarily sedentary work with limited physical exertion and occasional lifting of up to 20 lbs. Sits more than 6 hours a day. Must be capable of climbing / descending stairs in emergency situation. Must be able to operate routine office equipment including telephone, copier, facsimile, and calculator. Must be able to routinely perform work on computer, sitting for an average of 6-8 hours per day, when necessary. Must be able to work extended hours whenever required or requested by management. Must be capable of regular, reliable and timely attendance.

Working Conditions

Must be able to routinely perform work indoors in climate-controlled shared work area with minimal noise.

Mental and/or Emotional Requirements

Must be able to perform job functions independently or with limited supervision and work effectively either on own or as part of a team. Must be able to read and carry out various written instructions and follow oral instructions. Must be able to speak clearly and deliver information in a logical and understandable sequence. Must be able to perform basic mathematical calculations with extreme accuracy. Must be capable of dealing calmly and professionally with numerous different personalities from diverse cultures at various levels within and outside of the organization and demonstrate highest levels of member service and discretion when dealing with the public. Must be able to perform responsibilities with composure under the stress of deadlines / requirements for extreme accuracy and quality and/or fast pace. Must be able to effectively handle multiple, simultaneous, and changing priorities. Must be capable of exercising highest level of discretion on both internal and external confidential matters. Must be able to stay calm when being challenged by members in a stressful manner.
