Locomotive Mechanic - Burns Harbor, IN

Bemana is searching for a skilled Locomotive Mechanic in Burns Harbor, IN to join the mobile equipment maintenance team supporting a premier steel manufacturing facility. In this role, you will play a key part in a growing, high-impact department responsible for maintaining and repairing a dedicated fleet of 5 locomotives on-site. You will work alongside experienced team members who provide great support and collaboration, ensuring equipment runs safely and reliably to support continuous mill operations.

Key Responsibilities:

• Perform routine preventive maintenance (PMs), minor inspections, and daily safety checks on diesel-electric locomotives (including SW1500 models).
• Execute mechanical repairs and component replacements, such as changing brake shoes, servicing air compressors, and replenishing fluids/lubricants.
• Perform basic mechanical and electrical troubleshooting to identify breakdown causes and restore equipment to operational readiness.
• Inspect, test, and perform quality checks on completed repairs to verify equipment performance.
• Complete and review repair orders accurately, maintaining clear records of all service and maintenance activities.
• Adhere strictly to all OSHA, environmental, and site-specific safety regulations, including Lockout/Tagout procedures, wearing required PPE, and maintaining a safe work environment.

Required Qualifications:

• Minimum 1+ years of hands-on locomotive repair and maintenance experience (preferred over general diesel experience).
• Solid foundation in routine PMs, brake shoe replacements, air compressor systems, and basic electrical/lighting diagnostics.
• Ability to read, understand, and work from equipment service manuals and schematics.
• Strong mechanical aptitude with the ability to work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining a team-oriented approach.
• Comfortable working outdoors in a steel mill operational environment (work is shop-focused on-site, but equipment is serviced outside).
• Familiarity with SW1500 locomotives or similar industrial switcher models is a strong plus.
