The Long-Term Mine Planner is responsible for developing, optimizing and maintaining the life-of-mine (LOM) plan, including tails impoundments, and long-range production schedules that maximize the economic value of the mineral resource. The role translates the geological resource model into a technically achievable, economically robust and compliant mine plan that underpins the strategic business plan, budget, Mineral Reserve estimates and capital investment decisions.
The incumbent must have a strong understanding of the economic principles behind a profitable mine plan, including mineral quality parameters, blending, cut-off grade/quality, pit optimization, pay limits, mining width, dilution, recovery, contamination, cost behaviour, definition of profit, product prices and exchange rates, as well as the concepts and principles of integrated, value-driven mine planning.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's degree in Mining Engineering or a related discipline (required). A postgraduate qualification in mine planning, mineral economics or a related field is an asset
Registration, or eligibility for registration, as a professional engineer or mining professional with the relevant national professional body or engineering council
Minimum of 5–8 years of mine planning experience, including at least 3 years in long-term or strategic mine planning
Experience contributing to Mineral Reserve estimates and technical reports in line with internationally recognised reporting codes (e.g., JORC, SAMREC, NI 43-101, S-K 1300)
Demonstrated experience with scoping, pre-feasibility, feasibility and life-of-mine studies
Supervisory or technical mentoring experience is preferred
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
Advanced proficiency in strategic mine planning and optimization software (e.g., Deswik, Whittle, GEOVIA, Datamine, Vulcan, Hexagon MinePlan)
Pit/stope optimization, ultimate pit and phase/pushback design, and cut-off grade strategy
Long-range production scheduling, including mining sequence, waste dump, stockpile and tailings capacity planning
Financial modelling, net present value (NPV) analysis and economic evaluation of mine plan scenarios
Understanding of geological, resource modelling, geotechnical, hydrogeological and metallurgical inputs to the mine plan
Knowledge of mining methods, equipment selection, fleet sizing and productivity estimation
Knowledge of applicable mining legislation, permitting, environmental and closure requirements
Strategic thinking, with the ability to assess risk and uncertainty over multi-year planning horizons
Strong analytical, problem-solving and data interpretation skills
Effective communication skills and the ability to present technical recommendations to senior management
Proficient in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel
KEY WORK OUTPUTS AND ACCOUNTABILITIES
Develop, update and maintain the life-of-mine plan and long-term (typically three to five years and beyond) production schedules aligned with the company's strategic objectives
Maintain the life -of-mine LOM Tails impoundment plan and revise as necessary
Design and or revise Tails impoundment designs for the LOM Tials plan
Compile the mine planning input to the strategic business plan, annual budget and five-year plan
Conduct pit/stope optimization and design ultimate pit limits, phases, pushbacks, and waste dump and stockpile layouts
Define and review cut-off grade/quality and blending strategies to maximize resource value
Prepare and update Mineral Reserve estimates and supporting documentation, and support Competent Person / Qualified Person sign-off
Lead or contribute to scoping, pre-feasibility and feasibility studies, and mining trade-off studies
Determine long-term equipment, fleet, labour and infrastructure requirements, and provide input to capital and sustaining capital plans
Build and maintain financial models to evaluate mine plan scenarios, NPV and sensitivity to product prices, exchange rates and costs
Integrate new geological, geotechnical, hydrogeological and metallurgical information into the mine plan as the deposit is developed and resources are extracted
Monitor and apply modifying factors (mining, processing, metallurgical, infrastructure, economic, marketing, legal, environmental, social and governmental) through technical analysis
Identify, assess and communicate strategic risks and opportunities associated with the long-term plan
Reconcile long-term plans against medium-term plans, short-term plans and actual performance, and recommend corrective actions for deviations
Ensure alignment across long-, medium- and short-term planning horizons by liaising with geology, geotechnical, processing, environmental, finance and operations teams
Provide input to mine closure, rehabilitation and permitting plans
Perform technical assurance and peer review of mine designs and schedules
Coordinate and facilitate long-term planning meetings and reviews at a pre-determined frequency
