Job Description - Low Voltage/ Fiber Optics

A Low Voltage Technician, or Low Voltage Electrician, wires various types of electronics systems that operate with low voltage. Their duties include installing and connecting various types of wires and cables, explaining to clients how to use the systems and troubleshooting and maintaining the equipment.

Low Voltage Technician duties and responsibilities

Low Voltage Technicians are responsible for installing cables and wires correctly to ensure the systems function properly. They do that by carrying out several duties and responsibilities outlined in the typical Low Voltage Electrician job description, including:

  • Preparing estimates for new projects
  • Running and connecting wiring and cables for low-voltage electronics systems
  • Using blueprints and other guides to configure the wiring
  • Organizing and labeling the lines
  • Testing and troubleshooting various low-voltage systems
  • Performing routine maintenance on the electronics
  • Instructing clients on how to use the systems once they’re installed
  • Documenting the work they do on each project

Low Voltage Technician skills and qualifications

When evaluating candidates for your position, look for skills that enable them to perform the job duties well. Some skills and qualifications to consider for your Low Voltage Technician job description include:

  • Understanding of wiring and electronic systems
  • Ability to read blueprints, schematics and other diagrams used to explain systems

Low Voltage Technician experience requirements

Successful candidates typically have previous experience working with cables or wiring and following plans. However, some positions don’t require any previous experience, instead training candidates on the job if they show an aptitude toward this type of work. Low Voltage Technicians who have extensive experience might supervise other Technicians or train new hires.
 

Low Voltage Technician education and training requirements

There are no standard education requirements for this position. Many successful candidates receive on-the-job training through an apprenticeship or an entry-level Technician position. However, you might include the completion of a vocational program or a relevant low voltage certification under the preferred section of your Low Voltage Electrician job description. The National Center for Construction Education and Research offers the Electronic Systems Technician credential, which demonstrates mastery of various electronics systems.
