The Browning School is a K-12 boys school located on 62nd Street in midtown Manhattan, New York. Founded by scholar and teacher John A. Browning, The Browning School has been a leader in fostering the intellectual and personal growth of boys and young men since 1888. Serving roughly 470 students in kindergarten through grade 12, Browning strives to combine the best of a traditional prep school environment and curriculum with imaginative teaching and a strong value system – all in a single-sex setting.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Browning is searching for a full-time Lower and Middle School Art Teacher for the 2025-2026 academic year. The position begins immediately. The expected annual salary range for this position is $70,000-130,000, commensurate with experience. A bachelor’s degree or considerable experience in the role is required. An advanced degree in a related field is preferred. Applicants must be eligible to work in the United States.

Candidates for this Lower and Middle School Art Teacher position should have a comprehensive understanding of the elements and principles of both contemporary art and art history. Art teachers are expected to demonstrate exceptional drawing and painting skills, be experienced in working with ceramics and operating a kiln, and be eager to teach a variety of media including weaving, embroidery, and plaster sculpture.

Key Responsibilities

A successful arts teacher will cultivate a love of visual art; guide students to develop drawing, painting, and sculpture skills (including ceramics); and create a positive classroom community for our students. Among other things, they will be tasked with:

• Teaching visual art in grades 3 to 8
• Preparing materials and maintaining art facilities by independently maintaining an art classroom as well as a ceramics studio
• Displaying student artwork and helping to organize and mount an annual art show
• Advising a group of Grade 6 students
• Proctoring a weekly Middle School art and/or pottery club
• Participating in weekly faculty meetings and department meetings
• Supervising duties as assigned, such as lunch, recess, or study hall coverage
• Managing clear, timely parent communication regarding advisees’ academic progress and art students’ progress in class as needed
• Collaborating as a professional, collegial, and inspirational member of the faculty
• Heartily contributing to the school community by modeling and upholding The Browning School’s mission and values
