Job Description - Lower School Nurse


Summary:  The Lower School Nurse serves as a vital member of the Lower School team by supporting the physical, emotional, and spiritual well being of Orangewood’s lower school students. The Lower School Nurse promotes a healthy and safe learning environment while providing direct nursing care, managing student health records, coordinating health services, and partnering with families and faculty to support student success.

The Lower School Nurse is a position requiring a calling to use God-given talents to further the Kingdom of God.  The Lower School Nurse is expected to be a minister to the OCS community through actions, speech, attitude, and prayer, as they point students to Christ.

Essential Function:

  • Provide direct nursing care, first aid, and emergency treatment to students during the school day.
  • Assess student illnesses and injuries and determine appropriate interventions, parent communication, and recommendations regarding return to class or dismissal.
  • Administer medications and treatments in accordance with physician orders, state regulations, and school policies.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor individualized healthcare plans and emergency action plans for students with chronic medical conditions, including allergies, asthma, diabetes, seizures, and other health concerns.
  • Monitor communicable diseases and implement appropriate health protocols in accordance with local and state health guidelines.
  • Coordinate and conduct required student health screenings, including vision, hearing, and other screenings as applicable.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential health records, including immunization records, physical examinations, medication logs, accident reports, health screenings, and individualized healthcare plans.
  • Monitor and maintain compliance with Florida school entry health requirements, including immunization records, physical examinations, religious and medical exemptions, and other state-mandated student health documentation.
  • Communicate with families regarding missing or expired health records and coordinate follow up to ensure compliance with state regulations and school policies.
  • Track health trends, illnesses, and absences as needed and communicate concerns to appropriate school personnel.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, safe, and welcoming health clinic environment.
  • Manage inventory and ordering of medical supplies, medications, and health office equipment.
  • Ensure proper storage, handling, and disposal of medications and medical supplies.
  • Maintain compliance with all applicable school, state, and health department requirements.
  • Maintain current knowledge of Florida Department of Health regulations and school health requirements.
  • Prepare and maintain health documentation and supplies for field trips and special school events.
  • Serve as a liaison between families, healthcare providers, faculty, and administration regarding student health concerns.
  • Communicate effectively with parents regarding student illnesses, injuries, medications, and health plans.
  • Provide health education and guidance to students, families, and staff as appropriate.
  • Support faculty and staff by providing guidance regarding student medical needs and emergency response procedures.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of student medical emergency procedures and health related campus protocols.
  • Maintain emergency medical equipment, AEDs, and first aid supplies throughout campus.
  • Support health and safety planning for field trips, special events, and school activities.
  • Respond appropriately to medical emergencies and coordinate with emergency responders when necessary.

Supplemental Functions:

  • Attend faculty meetings, professional development activities, and school events as required.
  • Other duties, as assigned.

Requirements

Preferred Education Requirement: Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or related field. 

Certification(s) Preferred: Current Florida Registered Nurse (RN) license and current CPR and First Aid certification.

Years of Experience: 3+, Previous school nursing, pediatric, family practice, or community health experience preferred.
