Maintenance Mechanic

General Summary: 

Provide routine and emergency maintenance on mechanical equipment to ensure safe, efficient and reliable electric plant operation. Provide guidance, maintenance management and make recommendations to ensure continuous process improvement. 

Key Responsibilities: 

Performs complex overhauls, predictive, preventive, and breakdown maintenance on a variety of complex 

mechanical equipment to ensure plant availability and to maximize plant efficiency. Equipment includes, but is 

not limited to: 

• Pumps 
• Valves
• Gearboxes 
• Motors
• Scrubbers 
• Precipitators
• Equipment alignments 
• Rigging
• Welding 
• Fabrication
• Print reading 
• Boilers
• Conveyers 

Coordinates the planning, implementation, startup and long-term operations of new equipment and systems 

to facilitate safe, accurate and efficient operations. 

• Acts as primary contact for vendors. 
• Acts as job leader interface for contractors and temporary employees and provides support to craft and non-craft employees. 
• Provides direction for project budgets. 
• Develops project schedules and ensures timely project completion. 
• Provides technical support for engineering and operations. 

Manages all aspects of existing equipment and process maintenance for assigned plant area while ensuring 

safe and reliable operations. 

• Installs new replacement mechanical equipment and related components. 
• Recommends spare parts inventory and continuous improvements to maximize efficiency and availability. 
• Assists in budget preparation. 
• Develops and manages long-term maintenance programs to support equipment including, but not limited to: 

1. Lubrication 
2. Balancing
3. Thermography 
4. Ultrasound

Maintains proficiency through continuous learning and regulatory compliance from various agencies to ensure 

safety to self, others, and equipment. Agencies include, but are not limited to: NFPA, OSHA, EPA, and the State 

Department of Health. 

• Identifies and recommends skill specific training to enhance knowledge and skills for required safety regulatory processes and/or system technologies as needed by plant areas. 
• Participates in training and completes qualifications to support state and federal requirements. 

Utilizes, maintains, and updates detailed maintenance documentation records needed to support a safe and professional work environment. Documentation records include, but are not limited to: 

• P&IDS Vendor prints
• Manuals Overhaul or rebuild reports
• Calibration Logs
• Computerized Maintenance Management System
• Regulatory and Environmental compliance records

Job Criteria: 

Education & Experience

A two year Associate in Applied Science (AAS) degree in Mechanical Maintenance Technology or vocational or technical training in the various phases of mechanical maintenance, welding, and/or pipefitting; and/or the equivalent combination of experience required. Three years of fossil fuel power plant mechanic or equivalent experience in a mechanical maintenance field is preferred. Must have a valid driver’s license. 

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

• Knowledge of and demonstrated proficiency in plant equipment and process knowledge. 
• Knowledge and skills needed to perform all aspects of mechanical maintenance, in a complex industrial electric plant, including maintenance management activities for immediate and long-term needs. 
• Skills in Microsoft Office and Maximo along with other computer applications for record keeping. 
• Skills in communication, both verbal and written to effectively. 
• Ability to troubleshoot complex equipment and systems.
• Ability to ensure compliance with inventory policies and procedures. 
• Ability to read and interpret vendor and manufacture schematics and instruction manuals, plant procedures and work practices. 
• Ability to learn, interpret and adhere to REC standards, safety procedures, regulatory and environmental compliance practices in support of REC’s safety program, environmental management system and Rainbow Energy Center’s Mechanical safety program. 
• Ability to provide job direction and project coordination for all new and existing projects. 
• Ability to independently plan, organize, prioritize time and workload to accomplish tasks. 
• Ability to self-motivate while working independently and/or as part of a team. 
• Ability to build and maintain effective work relationships, both internal and external, and establish credibility with employees. 
• Ability to adapt to rapidly changing business circumstances; must be able to thrive in constantly changing business environment.

Working conditions will be indoors and outdoors, sometimes in inclement weather conditions of extreme cold or heat. Must be able to travel to various locations throughout the plant and facility grounds. Conditions in the plant and facility grounds may include extreme temperatures, noise levels, and heights. There will be overtime, and/or working weekends and infrequent overnight travel. 

This position requires the ability to occasionally to frequently sit, stand, walk, and lift up to 20-50 pounds frequently and bi-lateral carry up to 100 pounds on rare occasion. The ability to climb, balance, work at heights and work with arms above your head occasionally up to frequently. Ability to occasionally up to frequently stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, twist and squat, work on even and uneven surfaces and ability to work occasionally in confined space areas. Ability to frequently push, pull, carry, grasp and finger objects. Subject to frequent vibration and hazards and on occasion exposed to fumes, dust or mist. Must wear protective 

equipment when required. Must be able to differentiate colors, have vision ability to encompass close-up and distant work, and the ability to speak and hear.

Schedules shall be any combination of eight, ten or twelve hour shifts and includes days, afternoons, nights weekends and holidays.
