Job Description - Maintenance Mechanic I (Perm/FT/Benefits)

Job Description Summary:

The Maintenance Mechanic I performs skilled maintenance, repair, renovation, and preventive maintenance work in County facilities to ensure the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of building systems and equipment. This position troubleshoots and repairs facility equipment and infrastructure, including masonry, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and carpentry components, and responds to work orders by diagnosing issues and completing necessary repairs in a timely manner. The incumbent operates County vehicles to transport equipment and materials, maintains records related to work performed, and adheres to all applicable safety regulations and procedures. Work is performed independently with minimal supervision and requires strong troubleshooting, organizational, and customer service skills.

Job Description:

Salary Range: $41,820.00-$111,539.00

BUDGETED SALARY: $50,000.00-$55,000.00

Essential Duties:

  • Troubleshoots and repairs building equipment and facility systems in the field.
  • Performs routine preventive maintenance and corrective repairs to maximize equipment reliability and performance.
  • Assists with HVAC, electrical, and plumbing maintenance, renovations, upgrades, and repair projects within County facilities.
  • Responds to work orders by diagnosing problems, identifying solutions, and completing repairs in a timely manner.
  • Operates County vehicles to transport equipment, tools, supplies, and materials needed to complete assigned work.
  • Reads and interprets equipment schematics, diagrams, and shop drawings to support maintenance and repair activities.
  • Maintains accurate records of work performed, including labor, materials, and time associated with work orders.
  • Prepares reports and documentation related to maintenance activities and completed assignments.
  • Follows all applicable health and safety regulations, policies, and procedures to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Provides professional and responsive service to facility occupants, vendors, and County staff.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.


Years of Experience:
One (1) years as an apprentice in the heating/ventilation and air conditioning, electrical or plumbing field


Years of Supervisory Experience:
None


Education:
High School Diploma or equivalent

Certifications, Licensures, and Examinations:
A valid license issued by the State of Maryland as an apprentice in the field of heating/ventilation and air conditioning, electrical or plumbing.  (Copy of license must be submitted with application), OR Possession of such license within twelve (12) months of hire date.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of facility maintenance practices, methods, equipment, and tools.

  • Ability to troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair building systems and equipment.

  • Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment with minimal supervision.

  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize multiple assignments and meet deadlines.

  • Ability to estimate materials, supplies, tools, and labor requirements for assigned projects.

  • Ability to read and interpret equipment schematics, electrical diagrams, and plumbing drawings.

  • Basic computer proficiency and the ability to utilize maintenance management systems, software applications, and communication devices.

  • Strong problem-solving, customer service, and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to remain professional and composed when handling challenging situations or competing priorities.

  • Ability to safely operate tools, equipment, and County vehicles used in facility maintenance operations.

SAFETY:
Must comply with all Federal (OSHA), State of Maryland (MOSH), safety regulations, and applicable Harford County safety


COMPENSATION:
Other compensation may include, but is not limited to:

  • Overtime

  • Compensatory time
