Position Description

Middleton Place National Historic Landmark-

Middleton Place is a historic rice plantation located along the Ashley River in Charleston. Once home to a signer of the Declaration of Independence as well as hundreds of enslaved people, today Middleton Place is a National Historic Landmark featuring America's Oldest Landscaped Gardens, a historic home, and stableyards where we tell the stories of those who once lived and labored here. Their stories are a microcosm of American history.

Position Summary- The Maintenance Technician at Middleton Place is responsible for performing a wide range of repair and maintenance tasks to ensure the functionality, safety, and preservation of the historic property, buildings, and systems. This hands-on role requires expertise in mechanical repairs, electrical systems, HVAC maintenance, carpentry, and plumbing. The ideal candidate will be a proactive, skilled technician capable of diagnosing issues, completing preventive maintenance, and responding to repair needs in a timely and efficient manner. This position plays a vital role in supporting the daily operations and long-term preservation goals of one of America’s most iconic historic landmarks.

Reports to: Vice President of Facilities Safety and Security FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Qualifications

• 3+ years of proven experience in general maintenance or skilled trades with strong knowledge in mechanical, electrical, HVAC, carpentry and plumbing
• High School diploma or GED required, technical or trade school certification preferred
• Valid Driver’s license and reliable transportation
• Strong problem-solving skills
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Experience working on a historic property is a plus

Primary Responsibilities and Duties:

• Perform routine maintenance and repairs on buildings, systems, and equipment throughout the property using a ticketing system
• Diagnose and repair mechanical issues in equipment such as motors, pumps, and machinery
• Maintain, troubleshoot, and repair electrical systems including lighting, outlets, breakers, and wiring in accordance with safety regulations
• Service, inspect, and maintain HVAC systems to ensure efficient operation and comfort
• Perform carpentry tasks such as building repairs, framing, door and window installations, and general woodworking
• Conduct plumbing maintenance and repairs, including fixing leaks, unclogging drains, and maintaining water supply systems
• Complete preventive maintenance schedules and document work performed
• Respond promptly to maintenance requests or emergencies during and after hours, as needed
• Ensure all work is performed safely and in compliance with applicable codes and regulations
• Assist with seasonal projects and special events as required

Work Environment and Physical Demands:

• Comfortable with working both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions
• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, climb ladders and perform physical tasks are required
• Occasional Weekends and Holidays
