Job Description - Maintenance Technician

Job Description Summary

The Maintenance Technician will fix and maintain machines, mechanical equipment, and buildings. This individual will paint, repair flooring, and work on plumbing, electrical, and air-conditioning and heating systems. In the event of an emergency he/she may be called to support necessary tasks in association with that emergency. The general responsibilities of the position include those listed below, but management may identify other responsibilities of the position.

Job Description

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Perform routine maintenance and repair tasks across campus facilities with limited supervision, including light plumbing, carpentry, painting, and general building upkeep.

  • Complete common maintenance work such as changing light bulbs, replacing air filters, installing dispensers, changing locks, and minor repairs.

  • Assist skilled trades personnel with larger projects as assigned.

  • Conduct basic inspections of facilities and equipment and report maintenance issues or safety concerns to supervisors.

  • Follow all university safety policies and procedures, including participation in required safety meetings and trainings.

  • Use hand tools, power tools, and approved cleaning products safely and appropriately.

  • Assist with event setup and breakdown as needed.

  • Maintain a clean, organized work area and professional appearance.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.

  • 1 year of hands-on maintenance or facilities experience required (campus, commercial, residential, or similar environment).

  • Working knowledge of basic building maintenance practices.

  • Ability to follow work orders, written instructions, and verbal direction.

  • Valid driver’s license may be required.

Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to safely use basic hand and power tools.

  • Basic knowledge of plumbing fixtures, doors/locks, lighting, and general building systems.

  • Ability to work independently on routine tasks and seek guidance for more complex issues.

  • Professional communication skills when interacting with faculty, staff, students, and visitors.

  • Basic computer and mobile device skills for work orders, email, or messaging.

  • Dependable, punctual, and able to manage time effectively.

  • Willingness to learn new procedures and campus-specific systems.

Schedule & Work Environment

  • Work schedule may include evenings, weekends, and occasional holidays, based on campus needs.

  • Work is performed in academic, residential, and administrative buildings, both indoors and outdoors.

  • Noise levels may range from moderate to loud; personal protective equipment provided as required.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.

  • Ability to bend, reach, climb ladders, and work in tight or elevated spaces (including rooftops and lifts).

  • Ability to lift up to 35 pounds regularly and up to 40 pounds occasionally.
