SUMMARY

The Makerspace Specialist is a dynamic, evolving role focused on supporting the library's essential 3D printing service, assisting staff and patrons in the use of Makerspace services, as well as conducting periodic classes, representing the library through outreach events and services such as MakerFest, maintaining and developing workflow efficiencies, and assisting with the development of future Makerspace offerings. The Makerspace Specialist implements services in a constantly changing technical and social world while engaging innovative Maker approaches in the community. 



To perform this job successfully, an individual in this position must adhere to the Library’s mission, vision, and core values and be able to meet or excel in the following representative responsibilities, knowledge, and abilities:

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

· Acts as the primary point of contact for all 3D printing related inquiries, assisting both staff and patrons in the process.

· Conducts classes on 3D printing and other Maker activities

· Trains staff involved in 3D printing services.

· Assesses overall productivity and efficiencies, and observes community needs to ensure the growth of the Makerspace.

· Provides occasional and as needed coverage in the Technology Center to fill in for unexpected staff shortages. 

· Recommends new and innovative Makerspace services and improvements to ensure the library remains at the forefront of Makerspace activities.

· Stays current with new technologies and learns new Makerspace skills, to ensure quality teaching and support to staff and patrons. 

· Attends and represents the library at events such as the annual MakerFest, showcasing the library's Makerspace capabilities.

· Supports and upholds the Library behavior policy.

· Supports and applies the Library strategic plan.

· Works evenings and weekends and at any library location as needed. 

· Performs related duties as required.





KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES 

· Strong understanding of 3D printing technology, including the various types of 3D printers, materials, and software applications used in the process.

· Willingness to adapt and learn new Makerspace-related skills as the library's program expands.

· Desire and aptitude to stay updated with the latest trends and advancements in the Makerspace and 3D printing arena.

· Ability to troubleshoot common Makerspace equipment issues and to provide solutions in a timely manner.

· Solid analytical skills with an ability to research and plan on how best to support and improve current and new Makerspace concepts, services, and workflows.

· Strong communication skills to interact effectively with staff, patrons, and external partners. 

· Approachability, patience, and willingness to assist users at different proficiency levels.

· Ability to explain complex concepts in simple terms and engage a diverse audience in both group settings and one-on-one interactions.

· Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously, especially during events or peak service times.

· Knowledge of library policies, procedures, and best practices for providing public library services to all patrons.

· Skilled in the use of computers and other devices.

· Ability to engage and direct groups of people of all ages. 

· Ability to work and communicate effectively with the public and other employees.

· Ability to provide exceptional customer service.

· Ability to be flexible and creative in a rapidly changing environment. 

· Ability to push, lift, stack, and carry up to 50 lbs. on a regular basis. 



EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE or OTHER Qualifications include:

· Bachelor’s degree or two years of relevant public service experience

· Valid Michigan Driver’s License and/or reliable transportation
