The pipeline infrastructure constructed by Southern Company Gas's Construction Operations organization is fundamental to our success, enabling the safe, reliable, and affordable delivery of natural gas service to millions of customers.
The Construction Manager serves as a key leadership role responsible for overseeing a department of construction management professionals. This position is accountable for the successful execution of construction projects, ensuring performance excellence in safety, quality, schedule, and budget. The role is also critical in establishing and maintaining the people, processes, and technologies necessary to support operational success and continuous improvement.
The Construction Manager is responsible for the successful delivery of a portfolio of capital projects with annual construction values of up to $200 million. Depending on business priorities, the assigned portfolio may include gas distribution projects supporting new business growth or system improvements and gas transmission initiatives involving pipeline expansion and integrity management.
Portfolio Oversight & Planning – Regularly reviews and updates project information within the portfolio; prepares multi-year construction outlooks
Process Standardization – Maintains templates for construction-led processes and ensures consistency across the department
Financial Stewardship – Monitors key metrics to ensure prudent capital expenditure deployment and O&M cost minimization; approves construction estimates and advises Engineering per authorization policies
Construction Support Functions – Accountable for critical departmental functions including inspection systems, document/data collection, and materials management
Contract Management – Ensures consistent development of blanket and project-specific contracts that maximize value and minimize risk for the department and LDC
Communication Responsibilities
Cross-Functional Collaboration – Collaborates with other Construction Managers and intra-company departments to share best practices and leverage global construction resources
Executive Communication – Presents departmental performance and reports on major project progression to key stakeholders at the director and executive level
Staffing & Workload Management – Monitors staffing workload to ensure projects are properly staffed with the right skill sets; champions employee professional development
Leadership & Employee Development – Sets direction by tailoring departmental goals to individual goals; manages staff selection and supports performance development through coaching and training
Required:
High School Diploma or equivalent
Highly Preferred: BA/BS degree in construction management or business, engineering (mechanical, civil, electrical, chemical, petroleum).
Preferred: PMP or PMI-CP
10 years of progressively increasing experience in industrial or utility construction, engineering, project management, or operations with at least 4 years in supervisory roles.
Preferred: Gas infrastructure construction experience
Preferred: Acting in a leadership position on a construction project
Required:
Demonstrated success leading a team of internal and external resources accomplishing operational goals.
Preferred:
Demonstrated success in leading a program of construction projects and a team of external and internal resources involved in their delivery.
Expertise in construction contract creation, contract administration, with working knowledge of contract law and claims resolution.
Full understanding of project management principles including critical path scheduling, project budgeting and forecasting, stage-gated asset development processes, estimating, scheduling, and risk management.
Working knowledge of gas infrastructure construction equipment and techniques, inspection, welding non-destructive examination, directional drilling, OSHA standards, and PHMSA regulations.
Required:
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a polish geared towards team leaders up to executive levels.
Intermediate to high proficiency in Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. Ability to quickly learn and leverage internal business systems.
Excellent analytical skills, ability to recognize issues, evaluating options using data and facts, and implement solutions.
OTHER DETAILS:
This position is office-based at SC Gas Corp HQ, Mondays-Thursdays and remote on Fridays with occasional travel to job sites or other facilities. This guideline is subject to change at any time at leadership discretion.
This position may periodically be required to be on call for nights, weekends, and holidays to respond to emergency situations, depending on the LDC.
Person in this position may occasionally be exposed to varying weather conditions, noise, dust, mud, prolonged standing, walking on uneven surfaces, climbing ladders, reaching, kneeling/bending, and other environmental hazards related to construction. Personal Protective Equipment will be provided and must be worn.
This position may require overnight travel up to 10% of the time.
This position requires the use of a Company vehicle.
