Job Description - Manager, Sports and Recreation

Description

Sports and Recreation at The J provides opportunities for fun, recreation, and skill development in a welcoming and inclusive environment. The J’s Sports and Recreation facilities include five outdoor ballfields with lights, three of which are artificial turf fields; two gymnasiums for basketball, volleyball and pickleball; two tennis courts; four racquetball courts; four outdoor pickleball courts and an indoor turf space. Programming includes leagues, clinics and camps for both youth and adults in a variety of sports.

Job Purpose

The Manager, Sports and Recreation is one of several Manager positions within The J’s Sports and Recreation department and reports to the Assistant Director or Director of Sports and Recreation. This position coordinates and oversees all day-to-day operations and administration of the soccer program. This individual will also manage the department’s content and social media strategy through collaboration with other Managers and the Marketing department. Managers within the Sports & Recreation department may be required to support other programs as needed. Programs include: youth basketball, youth baseball, youth softball, youth flag football, preschool sports classes, sports birthday parties, adult basketball, adult softball, pickleball, racquetball, or tennis. 

The Manager works to ensure fiscal sustainability through strategic planning and innovative programming. The Manager performs all supervisory functions of the part time and seasonal staff within their program area(s) of responsibilities which may include coaches, scorekeepers, instructors, officials and others as deemed necessary; develop and implement a variety of programs; and ensure that all appropriate sports youth protection, health and safety standards are maintained. Additional job responsibilities may be assigned by the Assistant Director or Director of Sports and Recreation.

Essential Functions

  • Works effectively with supervisor and other members of the Sports and Recreation Department to fulfil the Mission of The J and the goals of the Department.
  • Design and implement skill-based soccer clinics for youth, focusing on technical and tactical development.
  • Monitor and evaluate program effectiveness, using participant feedback and performance metrics to drive improvements.
  • Coach/supervise clinics, programs, and camps as needed. 
  • Operational supervision of all program-related issues including facilities, equipment, maintenance, and housekeeping.
  • Oversees the recruitment/hiring/supervision/scheduling/training/evaluation/performance management of all employees within their program area(s). 
  • Creates, enforces, and oversees all policies, administrative and budgeting aspects of the program(s) and service(s) within their program area(s).
  • Oversees payroll, maintains records and statistics as required. 
  • Work closely with Marketing Communications to oversee the department’s publicity, signage, and digital/traditional/social media marketing.
  • Drives revenue through comprehensive programming. 
  • Support the Assistant Director by monitoring youth protection policies and enforcement as needed. 
  • Works cooperatively with professionals and lay people from within The J and other organizations to plan and implement special projects and events.

Requirements

  • Two+ years of experience as Director, Supervisor or Manager of a Sports and Recreation program or department
  • Strong background and experience in soccer as a coach, director, and/or administrator
  • Entrepreneurial approach to running a Sports and Recreation facility/program: takes ownership of the program’s success; actively seeks innovative ways to grow and improve; and is able to set goals, measure and evaluate outcomes; and adjusts operations based on quantitative budget and customer satisfaction data.
  • Strong leadership skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills  
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills 
  • Strong time management and problem-solving skills
  • Proficiency with technology related to finances, customer relations/service and employee management  

Preferred

  • USSF D License or higher
  • Experience as a Director of Coaching
  • Experience with content/website management, social media, and design tools (InDesign, Canva, Photoshop)

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to move freely around the Fitness, Sports & Aquatics facilities. 
  • Must be able to lift 25 lbs. 
  • Must be able to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods of time outdoors.
